Ianva

Ianva are a fantastically seductive group from Genova, sounding like the house band in an underground cabaret during Mussolini’s rule — at once nostalgic and subversive. Singer Stefania T. D’Altero’s Marlene Dietrich-like croon wafts out from amidst the smoky swirl of sober trumpets, languid strings, and blaring accordions. Meanwhile, frontman Mercy serves as a male counterpoint to D’Altero, conjuring images of handsome, slick-haired men in uniform carousing one last night before returning to the battlefield.

I don’t know how I missed English Russia before, but I’ve always found parodies of Soviet culture hilarious, so it really punches me right in the funny bone.

Arriving two years after their debut, Settle Down City, Old Wounds completes Young Widows’ transformation into a top-shelf rock band firing on all cylinders. Forging the best parts of Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Fugazi and The Melvins, Old Wounds is a series of dynamic, thoughtful tunes anchored by cavernous grooves that will certainly push most speakers to their breaking point.
