A children’s room mural can be stylish!
My illustrator friend June Kim sent me over this link of a pop kid’s room mural by Ami Suma. I always had a prejudice against these, because I have only seen cheesy rendered skies and butterflies in the past. But, by the look of this one, children’s room murals can be stylish! I even want one for myself.

Spanish artist Pepa Prieto weaves intricate and elusive narratives with her innocently psychedelic style — smiling creatures tangle into each other and matrixes of magical machines and bear-skin-clad people explore faraway lands, all playing their role in perpetuating the bustling civilization Prieto depicts in her pastel-colored paintings, installations, and murals. Dear Japan art event in New York
Come out to a gallery in Soho, New York, on Saturday afternoon and purchase art for your home for a good cause. The one evening event Dear Japan has been organized by a group of Japanese artists who live in New York. It features 170 illustrators and fine artists, and all the works are $200 or under. It’s a small portion of what most of the participating artists would normally sell their work for. Of course, I am donating for this good cause, too. Read more
BLOW UP: featuring Hanuka, Shimizu, Weber
Three illustrators from vastly different backgrounds — Sam Weber (Canada), Yuko Shimizu (Japan), and Tomer Hanuka (Israel) — are meeting at the crossroads of a distinct American aesthetic to examine their new-found artistic voices through personal mythologies, broken narratives and remixed identities. I am in total awe of Nathan DeYoung’s work from late last year titled Windows and Mirrors. This thoughtfully intelligent California-based artist pays particular observation to real life subjects around him, and the result is an inquisitive exploration into the human condition. Through inspirational conjured up characters at the tip of his paint brush, DeYoung is able to project his real life interpretations and analysis of those living around him onto canvas. Impressive, huh?
Some people consider comic books a form of art. Mike Esparza clearly did all of them proud with his work on Picasso Superheroes, which depict them in the form of Picasso’s world-renowned artistic style. In other words, incoherent combinations of awesomeness. Read more
An intelligently told, morally complex tale with a raft of unexpected twists, Gone Baby Gone is one of the most original films of recent times. Most films give you a sense of their narrative arc and it is easy to recognise the major plot points. Read more
This isn’t an outdoor art installation, but it is still somewhat curated. Or maybe hoarded is a better description. Somewhere in the inner western suburb of Sydney’s Summer Hill, there is a brightly coloured collection of garden gnomes on display. The owner of the home is yet to be seen, but there are hundreds of gnomes, side by side, all with equally dopey expressions on their faces and accompanied by a second fixation: caterpillar soft toys. There are so many gnomes, the garden is no longer visible. Maybe it’s an Amelie style prank that has just piled up over the years? Read more

I usually steer clear of anything smelling of disco-breaks: the thought just bores me. But with Padded Cell’s new release, Night Must Fall, I see a bit of a U-turn on the horizon. There’s something really interesting going on here: it’s a cocktail of 80′s swank laced with woozy narcotic undertones and flecked with snappy drum loops: weird, undeniably dark and ominous, but nonetheless pretty damn satisfying. We used to depend on sundials back in the day, but now there are multiple ways to tell the time. And Tokyo Flash has just invented another one. Based on LED technology, these watches are not only stylish but futuristic and wildly innovative. They even have a watch from minimalist designer Naoto Fukasawa that is more than just your basic timepiece. The Tokyo Flash site says that their watches are supposed to ‘resemble the various moods of a human’, and they’re definitely an attention grabber. These are watches to take us right through to the 22nd century.

Baltimore Mural by Josh Van Horne
My friend Josh Van Horne, a local Baltimore artist, did this amazing mural in our neighborhood that depicts the history of this warehouse-laden area.
A little infectious lollipop rock anyone? Feel free to embarrass yourself singing along at the stoplight. If the other drivers give you that look, roll down the windows and spread the love.
