Magnus
by Based on a true story, Magnus poses the question: ‘What would you do if your son tells you he would like to die?’ This superb Estonian film offers an honest and brutal examination of the reasons behind a suicide that his family are forced to accept because they fail to properly understand Magnus. The real life father of Magnus plays his father in the film, and his amazingly honest and hilarious performance adds immeasurably to the movie’s authenticity. An interview at the end of the film with him then discusses the real life suicide of Magnus along with how it may have been prevented and wider social implications. Few films take place or come out of Estonia and the beautiful views of the countryside as well as the lingering over the routine of everyday life add to the moodiness and bleak poetry of the piece. Due to its honesty, this film has been banned in many countries and no doubt will be wildly misunderstood by anyone who places an unrealistic value on human life.

A delightful uncomfortable film, told from the point of view of a broken woman. Kevin’s just not right, and that’s obvious from the outset as mother Eva battles to bring him up in a world where the onus is put squarely back on the mother. The intensity is poured on throughout, as tragedy seems imminent. Read more

The philosophy of a beginning is to me, a wonderful concept. I really enjoy flicking through the back catalogues of a musician and discovering their origin, then tracing their musical journey to the present. So for American-born, Paris-based sister duo CocoRosie, who released their third album The Adventure of Ghosthouse and Stillborn to much acclaim, making the trip to their beginnings is more than worth the journey: their debut album, Le Maison de Mon Reve (released back in 2004) was a gentle stroll through their pop and classical influences, which melt together seamlessly into a backdrop for their unique and enchanting voices.
Located by the Atlantic Avenue Station, in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, the BAM movie theaters are as genuine as it gets in New York when it comes to going to the movies. It features a small selection of the latest releases actually worth seeing, or you can immerse yourself in the BAMcinématek, which presents repertory classics, retrospectives, festivals, premieres, and rare films.
