Andy Uprock
|Sydney-based artist Andy Uprock’s original process, known as ‘Cuprocking’, entails sticking thousands of plastic cups into wire fencing, creating large, temporary works of street art. The idea was born whilst travelling through South-East Asia and learning traditional Thai art and practices under the guidance of Puk Tattoo. Cuprocking is now taking over fences of the world as Andy, photographer Juan Moss and renowned artist Brett Chan set off to transform streets and public areas into floating walk-by galleries. The 40 day global tour kicks off on June 30 in Barcelona and then continues to Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. Keen an eye on Andy’s website for updates.

Illegal explorations of abandoned spaces
Abandoned buildings are like time capsules, especially if unseen and untouched for over 50 years. In Italy, Luca Blast Forlani’s Intruders: Urban Explorers video is a look into his illegal explorations of various abandoned spaces: from industrial-age factories, theatres, psych wards, and WWII bombed sites. Everything is left as it was then, even the dusty calendar marking the date hanging thinly on the crumbly walls. Some spaces are more recent (say 10 to 30 years ago) but with the lack of human interruption, and plants running wild, it feels like a post-apocalyptic premonition.

After weeks of packing Australia’s crate with the best of Aussie nightlife, our crate was farewelled in lavish style at the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange send-off party in Sydney last week. We discovered Australia is swapping with Brazil, so we’re hanging out for the samba and cachaça to sway ashore and lead us astray. The AP Tour brought metalcore music heavyweights and a convoy of sponsor vans head-first into a stormy Seattle last night. The Hurley denim reps were rattled; they’d endured a long drive from Utah through what they described as the worst weather they’d ever experienced. Joking around with them before the show I realised how shaken up these guys actually were; hands were still shaking and their laughter was racked by nerves. Read more
NOW: an Analog Moving Picture Project
There’s a great story behind this prog-surf film. Riley Blakeway was an aspiring surf film-maker with incredible talent and a handfull of small film projects to his name. Chippa Wilson was a relatively unknown but amazing aerial surfer without the opportunity to show the world what he could do. In 2009, they won STAB magazine’s Little Weeds competition, respectively taking out the film-maker and surfer prizes. Read more

Just like myself, Courtney Reagor counts becoming a professional cupcake maker as one of her interests. She had me at ‘cupcake’, but easily held my interest with the predominantly hand-drawn illustrations on her site. She uses pen ink and humour to create illustrations for Time Out Chicago and CMYK, among other publications.
San Francisco-based photographer Rob Kroenert is responsible for the above image of Horsetail Falls, a seasonal waterfall in Yosemite that due to the positioning of the sun during part of February, reflects the last rays of the day in such a way that makes it look like molten lava.
Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like Neil Finn. His voice rasps with all the sincerity and integrity of a thousand heartfelt melodies. Heck, I’d probably trade my prized collection of Archie comics for just the chorus on this song. Driving Me Mad? You betcha(dupa). This man is a treasure. Bow low indeed.

Already with a Spectrum show under their belt, The Archerbolds are an up and coming Australian band well worth checking out. I saw the Sydney-based lads play recently at the Mars Hill Café and it was evident that they should be permanently rocking out on a real stage; not in front of coffee sippers. Their floating lyrics, smart guitar riffs and meaty bass lines are infused by The Strokes, Mars Volta, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin — ultimately producing a freshly spun modern-vintage sound. Lead vocalist and guitarist Geoffrey ‘Gep’ Rectin says The Archerbolds plan to create a solid sound for next year: ‘Over summer, we’re recording an EP and working on a set sound, defining more of an image’. If their track, Rest Your Soul, is anything to go by, then it should be pretty dandy.
Aussie streetwear label Zanerobe create the most wearable t-shirts around. Not only are they soft like the fur off a particularly smooth peach, they look mighty sharp too. Read more
