Skaffs takes on Melbourne
by Our friend Luke Feldman, the talent behind the very cool and ongoing Skaffs project, has produced a video from his recent solo art exhibition in Melbourne, during which he painted live and displayed his artwork, giant vinyl adhesives and collector toy.

Jennifer Tyer’s Fight exhibition
An exhibition of artist Jennifer Tyer’s latest work has just kicked off at Melbourne’s Helen Gory Galerie. Titled ‘Fight’, the works were inspired by the idea that, in tournament fights, where opponents of the same level compete, the person who wins will generally be the one with the stronger spirit. In doing so, she introduces a very human element to the militant contests, capturing the unwavering concentration in the rivals’ faces, their clear focus on winning, as well as the spectacle of the matches. The exhibition runs until February 21. Read more
Morgan Allender is a talented young Australian artist already making her mark on the art scene. She was the 2006 recipient of the prestigious Fleurieu Peninsula Youth Scholarship. For her current show called Realm at Melbourne’s Helen Gory Gallery ’she’s created beautiful abstracted floral studies as a means of exploring our relationship to the natural world’. Read more
The photography of Rohan Hutchinson is amazing, his subject matter of late focusing on the rapidly disappearing back alleyways in China which are being demolished for the Olympics, leaving thousands of people displaced. Hutchinson captures his images on large format negatives, meaning the processed photo can be enlarged almost to the size of a wall in a small room! He has his first exhibition between July 17-31 at the Flinders Lane Gallery in Melbourne.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. Illustrator Dallas Clayton has just published an awesome book called, wait for it, An Awesome Book. It’s a ridiculously cute, heart-rending children’s book, encouraging kids and adults alike to never lose our senses of wonder and imagination (psst, it could make a great late gift idea!)
Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’

Scanners’ new single Salvation
I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
Charlie Immer’s pastel-pallete sometimes obfuscates the gory violence in his surreal images. At other times, it heightens the gut-wrenching and visceral effect of his work. Read more
