South African artist The Flying Dutchman has been quietly honing his visual rhetoric for almost two decades and has no particular niche, opting rather for frequent direction changes in order to combat stagnation. As something of an journalistic artist, he documents everything around him, including the development of internal narratives, stories that will eventually find their own feet and continue without him. WE'RE THINKING

Moscow, China, Armenia, Finland. So many destinations that Laure Fissore, a young French illustrator, has elegantly drawn. Her latest book, New York, is full of posey with very realistic images of the Big Apple: a touch of colour here and there, the yellow cab, the wonder wheel, Chinatown. I am already transported.

I don’t get Flight of The Concords. I just don’t find it funny. I also don’t get most comedy these days. It’s so derivative and clichéd. Everyone wants the same laughs. I like comedy that pushes the boundaries in strange ways. Fonejack is one underground unit that have had me rolling around on the floor with their real life skits. Read more

WE'RE TRAVELLING TO

Sydney is not as well known for its great bars as other Australian cities. The city centre is dominated by over-priced style bars, while the suburbs are ruled by beer barns overflowing with terrible music, pokies, and sports. Nestled in the back streets of Surry Hills, surprisingly close to the city, The Cricketer’s Arms bucks the trend, with an open fire-place, great contemporary music selection, comfortable couches, a cosy outdoor area, decent food, free board games, and the laidback vibe that’s now all too rare in Sydney. WE'RE READING

Interior design website, Apartment Therapy, just posted some amazing pictures of ’70s rock stars in their parents’ homes. My favorite is of David Crosby and his dad [below]. The two look so completely opposite of each other that it’s hard to believe that it’s Crosby’s real dad. They also look like they’re barely concealing the contempt they have for each other. Crosby’s father was an Academy-Award-winning cinematographer who shot Tabu and High Noon, amongst other well-known films. Read more
