The Nine Streets
The Nine Streets, or ‘De Negen Straatjes’, is so named for the nine small, cosy streets between Raadhuisstraat and Leidsestraat, just minutes from the heart of Amsterdam. The streets house a great number of vintage stores, alternative fashion, and specialised theme stores – including some particularly good Dutch bookstores. It sure is a spectacular area, and is encased by some of Amsterdam’s finest 17th century canals. I can imagine years ago it would’ve been incredible for discovering new art, literature and fashion, but recently Paul Frank, Carhatt and Vans managed to sneak in there – amongst others – so it doesn’t feel quite so adventurous anymore. A must see all the same, some of the more eclectic vintage stores are amazing.

Imagining Mozambique at Maxalot Gallery
On August 27, a fundraising traveling group show opens at Maxalot Gallery in Amsterdam. Eleven artists from around the world were asked to create a piece that would help to enlighten the public to the every day life of the children of Mozambique, in the hope of inspiring awareness and positive action in some capacity. Designed as offices and commercial spaces for creative industries, the Matchbox is the work of design team Allard Meine Jansen and ‘houses twenty-two corporate units, a rooftop restaurant and semi-underground parking in the artistic hub of Amsterdam North’. The building’s shape was derived from piling boxes of matchbox on top of each other [see the photo below] and has been conceptualized to give every company its own space and identity. In addition, ‘bridges constructed above a central atrium garden act as catalyst for the networking between companies, while distributing sunlight through the building’. Read more

Having been at the vanguard of Bristol’s graffiti scene for some time now, Sickboy has just released his first solo show, Stay Free, in London. The concept is a good one, although slightly reminiscent of his contemporary, Banksy. He’s transformed a Victorian Grade II listed building in East London into a ‘3D creative playground, a la a Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’. What’s more, there’s a golden ticket up for grabs. 1000 keys will be released to visitors, and the person whose key fits the lock will become the new owner of the Factory.
French duo Trop Tard make straight-faced, Suicide-esque, synth-and-guitar electro tunes that sound like dark rituals performed in the catacombs beneath the streets of Paris. Repetitive, bleak, and cold, this is dance music for the shambling undead.
With just a limited, two-toned palette of acrylics, A. Andrew Gonzalez renders incredibly detailed images, mainly of goddesses and sirens, that look as if they’ve been carved in relief out of marble. Read more
Formed in New York and now based in Rotterdam and Berlin, SMAQ is a collaborative studio for architecture and urbanism by architects Sabine Müller and Andreas Quednau. Here they have created an interesting installation called Bad (bath) in the Solitude Palace Gardens in Stuttgart with the premise of creating a usable sculpture which entwines a 1000 metre long garden hose throughout a timber structure. Ok, so maybe it’s the extra-strong Brooklyn coffee I’m drinking or perhaps its that the pine coated goodness of Christmas is well and truly in the air, but I’m kinda excited this morning as my wife has just launched her website, Feature Shoot, which is a resource for photo editors, art directors, industry professionals, and pretty much anyone who appreciates good photography. It’s a great way to discover new photographic talent and the website is already bursting with interviews with up-and-coming American photographers alongside that of established photographers who have completed a project or whose work has taken on a new direction.
