Morgan Allender

Morgan Allender is a talented young Australian artist already making her mark on the art scene. She was the 2006 recipient of the prestigious Fleurieu Peninsula Youth Scholarship. For her current show called Realm at Melbourne’s Helen Gory Gallery ‘she’s created beautiful abstracted floral studies as a means of exploring our relationship to the natural world’. Of the work, she says: ‘On a personal level, these paintings are an expression of my own feelings of dislocation from nature. In contrast to a rambling childhood in country South Australia, the concrete of inner Melbourne can seem worlds apart. I spend a lot of time in the park’.

Jennifer Tyer’s Fight exhibition

An exhibition of artist Jennifer Tyer’s latest work has just kicked off at Melbourne’s Helen Gory Galerie. Titled ‘Fight’, the works were inspired by the idea that, in tournament fights, where opponents of the same level compete, the person who wins will generally be the one with the stronger spirit. In doing so, she introduces a very human element to the militant contests, capturing the unwavering concentration in the rivals’ faces, their clear focus on winning, as well as the spectacle of the matches. The exhibition runs until February 21. Read more

New Banksy artwork angers the Catholic Church

Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. And who are we to disagree? Read more

Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design

Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.

Sydney is not as well known for its great bars as other Australian cities. The city centre is dominated by over-priced style bars, while the suburbs are ruled by beer barns overflowing with terrible music, pokies, and sports. Nestled in the back streets of Surry Hills, surprisingly close to the city, The Cricketer’s Arms bucks the trend, with an open fire-place, great contemporary music selection, comfortable couches, a cosy outdoor area, decent food, free board games, and the laidback vibe that’s now all too rare in Sydney. This website hosts a nice collection of quirky, sometimes mind-boggling, sculptures from around the world. There’s a certain Dali-esque feel to a lot of them – those surreal, dreamy hallucinations turned into a warped reality. I’ve always been a sucker for art that really catches you out for a few seconds, and these certainly do that.

I’ve yet to find out what they put in the water in Germany that generates such a consistently rich stream of good electronica. Carrying the torch at the moment is Hendrik Weber, aka Pantha du Prince, whose early 2007 release, This Bliss, landed on my doormat with a deep bass-kick and hasn’t left my iPod since. Read more
