Beth Rowley
Twenty-six year old Beth Rowley hails from Bristol, England, but her smoky gospel style creates a beautifully mysterious impression of a dark diva from yesteryear, sashaying across a small stage to a packed crowd. Her debut album Little Dreamer is an enchanting mesh of country, blues and gospel that draws heavily on Rowley’s talents as a singer-songwriter. Indeed, Little Dreamer is the perfect soundtrack to a rainy Saturday afternoon, when you’ve got nothing to do but drink wine and sing along.

When I was little, for reasons I can no longer remember, I wanted to be Catwoman. A little older and appreciating the impracticalities of such an outfit, I’ve decided to be Erykah Badu, instead. On the Spanish leg of her recent European tour she rocked the crowd with her funky dance moves and a set of pipes that are a weapon of mass destruction. Her tunes, both old and new, were performed with vigour and something a little harder to explain. It was her vibe, her flow, her drama, her wit that enthralled me. Like Catwoman, she was something beautiful, dangerous and dressed in black.

Al Farrow just did a show with me at the Martin Irvine Gallery in Washington DC. He builds religious reliquaries and mosques out of gun parts: AK47s and Uzis, in particular. They’re really beautiful. It sounds gimmicky but it’s actually extraordinary. The newer stuff that he’s doing is extremely time-consuming. His work is very meticulous, and the beauty of the craft is a striking contrast to how instantly and senselessly life can be taken. Read more

I love the bold watercolors of California artist Erin Althea, with their esoteric imagery and experimentation. Yup, I’m just a sucker for the folksy stuff.
Sometimes tests are just too hard. Sometimes they’re just dumb. Funny Exam Answers collects all the funniest and most ridiculous results of students who may not have book smarts, but are quite clever and creative in other ways.
I don’t get Flight of The Concords. I just don’t find it funny. I also don’t get most comedy these days. It’s so derivative and clichéd. Everyone wants the same laughs. I like comedy that pushes the boundaries in strange ways. Fonejack is one underground unit that have had me rolling around on the floor with their real life skits. Read more
Concept albums have always been a hit or miss affair, all too often to be taken with a pinch of salt. Some work brilliantly; many fall flat on their esoteric face. Dr John’s response to Hurricane Katrina is an intriguing album. Some is rousing, some depressing: it’s littered with political statements, perhaps too much at times but given it’s purpose the over-saturation isn’t surprising. Read more
