Barry Hughes’ time-based media
Barry W. Hughes is an Irish media artist who has exhibited both digital and analogue photography, video and web-based projects throughout Ireland and internationally. Hughes’ practice involves the use of time-based media in exploring the conceptual themes of his work, such as psychological states relating to the process of time as interpreted by physical activity. He currently lives and works in Dublin.

Kate Hutchinson’s Irish Grandmother series
Kate Hutchinson’s series, Irish Grandmother, began as a way of ‘connecting to and bestowing importance on my grandmother, all the while spending time with her in her Dublin flat where she dwells alone. Since the project’s inception in 2006, further visits in 2007 and 2008 have allowed me to examine and bear witness to her daily life. My grandmother is a quiet and reserved woman who is an integral part of who I am. She does not readily allow people to enter her world or know her thoughts. While photographing her daily routine and rituals, I did not so much learn about her history or her life story, as was part of my original goal, rather I discovered who she needs to be to get through every day’. Femke Hiemstra’s beautifully rendered and haunting images transcend those of typical neo-surrealist fairytale artists — her mixed-media paintings and graphite drawings of anthropomorphized fruits, vegetables, toy parts, and animals reference retro packaging from around the world and have an expressive complexity about them, encompassing entire narratives within single panels. Obsessive, impossibly intricate art can sometimes veer off into self-congratulatory messes, overwhelming viewers while not having any real substance. Vasco Morao’s Escher-esque line drawings are rather simple, however, and have a gorgeous, meandering, and meditative quality about them. Read more
Disregard the buzz that surrounds those other cupcake shops in New York City. Cheeks Bakery in Williamsburg houses the best cupcakes that I’ve eaten. The clean and understated decor extends to the menu, where being fancy doesn’t rule on the cupcake shelves. Cheeks offers, simply, vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with either vanilla or chocolate cream. But if you do want more, Cheeks has that as well, a limited selection of pies and cakes.
Having originally sprung from the Shaky Isles (otherwise known as New Zealand), I can appreciate the humour in the New Zealand cartoon series, Bro Town, the first homegrown animated series to screen during local prime time. It’s simply brilliant, a real play on the ‘thuck’ accent and small town ways of our Kiwi brethren.

Almanac Market in Philadelphia is slightly pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Offering fantastic bread, cheeses, produce, and cured meats such as sopressata and pepperoni, it was a great pit stop when my band played in town, and definitely more economical and tasty than hitting a greasy spoon for road snacks.
Yum, yum, cupcakes are fun. These creations are so clever, so arty, so damn bizarre that it would almost be a shame to eat them. Almost! Read more
