There’s something to be said for staying in a hotel room that’s bigger than your Brooklyn apartment. Yup, it happens so rarely that when you come across it, you kinda want to hang inside, bask in the space, and imagine that this really is your life. 365 days a year. Ah ha, then you wake up. Anyway, I stayed recently at the beautifully designed Hotel Omm in the Eixample district of Barcelona, surrounded by the glitzy, sparkling shops that dot the landscape and by the disarmingly original Gaudi buildings that tower spectacularly above the skyline. We asked New York photographer Christoph Morlinghaus about the process behind capturing one his of stunning architectural and interior shots: ‘More often than not my time at a certain location is extremely limited. For example, for the shots that I took at Terminal 5, there was no access before the shoot day and I had a very short time window between the construction crews finishing and cleaning the terminal and the TSA clearing it. So I just switched to autopilot, mounted my 8 x 10 on a dolly, and literally ran through the building and took pictures. Even if I have more time, I try to work as quickly as I can. When I spend too much time at a certain place, the images tend to be too pretentious and artsy’. There’s an exclusive interview with Christoph Morlinghaus on the Feature Shoot website.
A Melbourne native once said to me: to find the good bars, you have to look for the bins in alleyways. Section 8 totally fits that quota. It is a bar that is a. in an alleyway, and b. filled with trash. As enticing as that sounds, I must make it clear that the alleyway is actually an old carpark in Chinatown and the trash is not exactly trash. But don’t let that stop you. Section 8 is pumping.
