Girl Talk digs, errr, Beyonce

We invited Greg Gillis, aka Girl Talk, who aside from being the DJ of the moment is also the remix whiz behind tracks from Beck, Tokyo Police Club, and Grizzly Bear, to give us a rundown on the songs he’s wearing out right now for our sister site, My Secret Playlist. He started off by propping Beyonce’s anthemic single, Single Ladies [listen below]. Go figure! ‘This is one of my favorite Beyonce tracks ever. It has so much energy, and the chorus gets dark in a great way. The clapping never stops. The video is a flawless execution of a performance style clip. It’s perfect’. Prodigy live

More than a decade of built-up expectations are going to be hard to deliver on. Without realising it, the years spent wrecking my eardrums with Their Laws and Out of Space inadvertently resulted in setting Prodigy the massive task of promising me the greatest live performance I would ever see. It had to be the ultimate experience: a band who have delivered the heaviest beats of the last sixteen years fronted by a man who’d give Jonny Rotten a run for his money. On the night, it was good — very good — but not good enough. There was a hint of fatigue: they’ve been destroying arenas with the same tunes for almost two decades, and the whirlwind behind their live shows, Keith Flint, will be 40 next year. After all, sixteen million albums sold and an almost cult following secured them the title of greatest dance act of all time long ago, so now it’s just for fun — something to keep the fans loyal to their king. So, here’s a clip of them way back when they started, at their freshest. The early 90’s acid rave scene barely gets a flicker on television these days, so it’s also a nice piece of memorabilia of a culture forced underground and eventually washed away.

Crimea X’s Secret Playlist

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. It was during the 80s when I was extremely young, and I’ve never stopped listening to this song’. Read the rest of Crimea X’s Secret Playlist.

I need to have this as I’ve been so inundated with both lately that it’d be nice to have something to look at while having it stuck in my head.

Hey Guys,

Well, I suppose I don’t need anything. But it sure would freshen up the music collection. Plus, Moby seems like a pretty cool guy. In fact, he is doing some great things for independent film makers at the moment on his site by providing unreleased music, recorded by him, for free. Now that’s giving back! I found this link a while back.Really cool!

Thanks Guys!
Keep up the great work!

An army of angry mutant pigeons is trying to take over the city, and I can only stop them if I have the Power Of Music! The pigeons know this, so they stole all of my CDs. Therefore, I need to win so that I can have music that I can use to protect us from the pigeon invasion.

I recall a Saturday of my youth, when instead of tuning into the early morning cartoons, I chose to listen to the radio, and what I heard amazed me. Last night’s blaring sounds were replaying on the radio.
Okay, the truth is ever since i saw Moby’s cover art for Play in my sister’s endless CD collection, I’ve become a fan of album artwork. Since then, I have found Lost at E Minor, and through your site I found my holy land, Sleevage. M83 was a more recent find, but Graveyard Girl has definitely been on repeat.
Thank you for helping to please my album art appetite, and this would only add to the feeling of fullness.

Alison Brady presents the human form as if it were either a strange plant or a plastic toy uncovered in a middle-American backyard. At once disturbing and whimsical, Brady’s images depict bodies ill-fitted to their environments, as if they were discarded, forgotten, or malfunctioning. Read more

Pickle Hut was designed by architect Dan Hoffman and The Cranbrook Architectural Office. It is a place where the children of Brookside School can play, recite stories and dream. Set up for children to enter into this mysterious U-Shape building, the Pickle Hut offers up a little hub of sanctuary in order to let their imaginations fly. If only I had such a magical edifice to call my own and run to when head nun, Sister Mary, was on one of her many Catholic tirades. Eek! [photo by Paul Hitz]

Swedish designer Paula Hagerskans has a cool masculine-edge to her female fashion lines. But it’s her attention to detail that really blows my mind. Her perfectly tailored jackets, along with her flat dress shoes, make dressing up fun, comfortable and classy. When asked what she keeps in mind while designing, Hagerskans responds, ‘Bohemic music lovers, humor, graphic design and the female body’.

French fashion designer and illustrator Cedric Rivrain draws how I’d love to be able to — with amazing attention to detail and patience. He’s designed for Martine Sitbon and John Galliano at Christian Dior and his fashion experience reflects in his work, which has been shown in magazines such as Numéro, Dazed and Confused, Tokion, Stiletto, and A magazine.

No one disputes that the Bush Administration is no friend to civil liberties, but this little spot on the ACLU website smacks of paranoia. At least it’s entertaining, and some people might actually welcome the ultra-convenient vision of the future this piece of propaganda offers.

Artist David Shrigley’s animated music video for Blur is so simple, so sweet, so perfect. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it, yet it still makes me cry every time.

I’m a big fan of Alex Turner’s side project, The Last Shadow Puppets. It’s just really good music. When I first got their record, I didn’t know if it was a re-issue or if it was brand new. It doesn’t sound like a jokey pastiche. It sounds sincere.
