by Originally hailing from Kendal, Cumbria and now based in Leeds, the Wild Beasts foursome are the next hopefuls for Domino Records, who sent the group out to Sweden to record their first album, Limbo, Panto, released on June the 16th. The new single — The Devil’s Crayon — shimmers in wide-screen around a sense of location, melody and wonder at the scale of things. Indeed, it sounds like the theme song to a new kind of very English road movie.

Don’t be afraid of the word retro. It has haunted us all from time to time, but one group that has embraced it with open arms is UK duo, La Roux. Their music is synth pop in the vein of Calvin Harris, Human League, The Eurythmics, and The Knife. There are quite a few of these young and ambitious pop starlets on the scene including Goldielocks. But La Roux takes the cake. Literally. I’m obsessed with their song In For the Kill and have a feeling summer will take it and make it a hit.

Bath based Lucy Oldfield has just moved onto a Canal boat — a risky move for an illustrator whose art is based on delicate linework. Luckily it hasn’t affected her steady hand. Her work is beautifully constructed with a fine eye for feminine detailing. She’s currently working on greeting cards, having previously worked for the design company I Love Dust, with clients including Orange, Mini Cooper, Conde Nast, The Times and The Sunday Express.
The surreal artwork of Mimi Leung
Returning to Hong Kong after graduating from The Royal College of Art inspired artist Mimi Leung to create the series The Hope and Struggle. Motifs such as disease, mutation and vomit help convey the tensions of life in Hong Kong and the need for self-expression. Her graphic style naturally lends itself to collaborations with musicians and has landed her work with Vice magazine. If that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, she co-founded an artists collective called ‘what they could do, they did‘. With an upcoming show in Edinburgh Festival, it’s well worth looking into. Chris McNally is a life coach who uses drawing as a way to relax. He uses a light touch and Aquarelle color to create predominantly bird and animal illustrations.

Brooklyn-based artist Jeph Gurecka uses food and organic matter in fascinating ways to make his conceptual pieces, taxidermying chicken parts and arranging them into a muscular, human torsoe, or making a huge pile of skulls made out of bread, or reproducing photos using salt, soil, and ash. At a gig last year Foals were forced to abandon their last song halfway through because the stage was stormed by too many crazed fans. The reason behind the hype they’re creating, both on stage and in the normally merciless media, isn’t immediately clear upon first listen: the sound is less than friendly on the ears, and they don’t employ the same catchy hooks and melodic chorus patterns that shoot your average band to fame in their early years. The AirPiano is an innovative musical interface which allows the playing and controlling of software instruments simply by moving your hands in the air. Above the AirPiano is a virtual matrix of keys and faders, each assigned with MIDI messages ready to be triggered. The length of a triggered note is equivalent to the time a hand is placed on the corresponding virtual key, which is also confirmed by LED feedback.
Australian designer Mic Eaton has created an innovative line called Material Boy which specializes in over-sized shirts and funky trackpants. Read more

Formed in New York and now based in Rotterdam and Berlin, SMAQ is a collaborative studio for architecture and urbanism by architects Sabine Müller and Andreas Quednau. Here they have created an interesting installation called Bad (bath) in the Solitude Palace Gardens in Stuttgart with the premise of creating a usable sculpture which entwines a 1000 metre long garden hose throughout a timber structure. In his series Land of the Free, photographer Steve Schofield captures geeky, cosplay fanatics in their own homes, sometimes with their costume-less family members. Two Klingons relaxing in a Middle-American living room as if waiting for grandma to serve cookies and tea makes for a truly compelling image. Schofield’s photos seem tense, as if halfway stuck between a mundane but warm reality and an exciting fantasy world. Read more

I love art that scares me a little. Erica Eyres somehow manages to make subtly unnerving drawings of distorted figures using nothing more than a ballpoint pen and a piece of paper. She renders shockingly realistic hair, yet skews the proportions and features of her subjects, exaggerating their expressions and making them look monstrous.
