Animalphabet
|Typography for a good cause? Designers can help make the world a better place by just purchasing one of these strictly limited posters. Animalphabet is a typographic project and a collaboration between an impressive list of 26 artists, including the mighty Geoff Mcfetridge. Each designer creates one letter formed as a real or invented animal, which later on will be displayed the homepage and sold as a poster and the profits will be donated to Unicef. Oh, and remember to recycle!

I’ll admit it, on first listen and in a terrible figity mood, i jumped though the tracks, looking for the instant gratification of a big melody before switching to something else. Despite a few negative reviews from others also too quick to judge, the response to this album has been so astoundingly positive, it’s impossible to dismiss. Written after emerging from a period of social isolation and centered around issues of a man and his dying lover, The Antlers’ album, Hospice, slowly creeps up upon the listener. With delicately constructed chords and small movements, the journey of the album unravels loneliness, isolation and deep catharsis.

I can tell how much I like a designer by the the speed at which I bookmark their site. With Rob Lowe (aka Supermundane), it was on the home page. That’s a pretty good sign. Supermundane is a multi-disciplined creative who impressively creates all text himself for every project he does. Prepare yourself to be jealous.

These slick outdoor lighting units designed by Jordi Vilardell and Meritxell Vidal remind me of croquet wickets, but I think I’d use these more often.

I’m kinda obsessed with this track by Kansas City hipsters, Republic Tigers. Maybe it’s the Phil Spector-ish wall of sound harmonies or perhaps it’s the thumping bass riff, which drives the ear worm melody. Whatever. In these times of throwaway pop, it’s the well crafted and subtely produced songs that are truly memorable, and these guys have it in spades, as reflected right across their brilliant debut album, Keep Color.
