The work of Australian artist David Capra is exhibited until June 27th at Sydney’s Gaffa Gallery, featuring a ‘market stall of spirit-finger gloves, anointed toothpaste, glory boxes, steaks and hand-made coasters’. Of his work, he says: ‘My work is a result of exploring Outsider art and contemporary craft practices. It will take the form of a market store. Making the work was like taking steps towards working more intrinsically, working against creative sensibilities I had developed, resulting in objects that are more of a direct and honest response to the world.

We asked Australian designer and illustrator, Jane Abma, to tell us about an artist whose work she really admires right now. This is what she had to say: ‘While wandering the streets of the inner West of Sydney, I stumbled across one of the most original street artists I have encountered in some time. Local artist Will Coles glues his intriguing concrete installations of mobile phones, TV remotes and TVs along alleys and pathways in a way that one has to look closely to discover them. I appreciate his works not necessarily because of the message he may or may not be trying to communicate, but simply because they provoke one to take more notice of the little things that often go completely under the radar’ Read more

Samantha Everton’s Vintage Dolls
Samantha Everton’s latest exhibition, Vintage Dolls, explores ‘history, race and culture through magic realism’. Of the series, Everton says: ‘I was inspired by the innocent act of children playing dress ups and the way they re-enact adult behaviour, concepts and themes, without preconceptions or judgement’. The show runs at the Dickerson Gallery, Melbourne, between March 4-22 and at the Dickerson Gallery in Sydney between April 1-19.

Located on a mountain in country outside Mudgee, in New South Wales, Australia, a permanent camp designed by Casey Brown has been set. A timber structure clad in copper has been designed to have a closed state and an open state. From the closed position, the flanks of copper are hoisted and capture views across the valley. With an imagery of structures, materials and mechanics of old, there is something romantic about this foothold on the hill.
If animated wall drawings of severed heads and insect men ejecting their brains from their craniums is what people produce when they have too much time on their hands, then we should do their laundry for them and cook them dinner so they’ll have even more time on their hands.
