David Capra’s artistic market stall

The work of Australian artist David Capra is exhibited until June 27th at Sydney’s Gaffa Gallery, featuring a ‘market stall of spirit-finger gloves, anointed toothpaste, glory boxes, steaks and hand-made coasters’. Of his work, he says: ‘My work is a result of exploring Outsider art and contemporary craft practices. It will take the form of a market store. Making the work was like taking steps towards working more intrinsically, working against creative sensibilities I had developed, resulting in objects that are more of a direct and honest response to the world.david capra

Judy Fox

Judy Fox’s figurative sculptures look almost real, but unlike many of her contemporaries, she uses more traditional materials and methods to create them. Using terra cota and casien, Fox renders figures from world religions and folklore as vulnerable (her figures are all nude, and many of them are children) yet still somehow majestic characters.

Crimea X’s Secret Playlist

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. It was during the 80s when I was extremely young, and I’ve never stopped listening to this song’. Read the rest of Crimea X’s Secret Playlist.

We asked New York-based photographer Gregg Delman about the differences between shooting for print and online: ‘With online publications, the layouts are very specific. You need to shoot and crop to fit a specific box on the web page. With print, you have a bit more freedom. Editors are willing to layout there text around your images as long as its within reason. Also, there is a lot less time given for online shoots. All the MTV.com shoots have been done in a 9 x 10 foot office space with fifteen minutes max’. There’s a full interview with Gregg Delman at the Feature Shoot website.

Riffing on the idea that ‘eating was tending toward breathing’, Harvard professor David Edwards, in conjunction with design studio Le Laboratoire, has created Le Whif, the breathable chocolate. No chewing, no calories, and it comes in mint, rasberry, mango, and plain chocolate flavors. The product may just be a fancy scratch-and-sniff sticker, but it looks so sleek and design-y.

Unlike a lot of other web comic artists, the guys at Team Society League can actually draw well. They’re also freaking hilarious. Seriously, can you top pulling God’s finger?

Set in a remote Chinese village in the 1920s during a cholera outbreak and with a revolution bubbling in the background, The Painted Veil is a wonderfully tortured love story which excels on all levels. Scanners’ new single Salvation

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
