Breathing Earth
Breathing Earth is a morbid reference website that’s simply a flash map that tells you a country’s population, birth and death rates, and how much CO2 it emits.There’s a ticker on the side that also shows how many people have been born, how many have died, and how much CO2 has been emitted since you opened the URL. As you watch, the countries change from beige to yellow, to flashing red as they emit more CO2.

California-based drums-bass-piano trio Topaz Rags may or may not have tumbled out of a desert roadhouse, but their sound evokes the kind of gleefully sinister goings-on you might imagine beneath thrumming bug zappers and a flickering neon glow after the bartender has locked the front door and Bubba has donned his purple cloak.

I’ve never been one to go nuts over ceramics. However, Louisianna artist Michaelene Walsh may have changed that in a big way. What’s not to love about a ceramic popsicle collection, ceramic representations of classic vintage toys, or her amazingly whimsical mugs? As easily as these objects might have been created out of any other sculptural medium, the clay, with it’s irregularity and beautiful textured glazes, brings a tangible sense of life and character to these objects, which is what makes them special.
Monarch are an incredibly grim, lumbering doom metal band from Basque country in France. Frontwoman Emilie Bresson is one of those rare female singers in metal that’s at once fierce and raspy, yet identifiably female, creating a haunting, menacing sound that can stand up against the most ragingly macho bands out there.

This isn’t an outdoor art installation, but it is still somewhat curated. Or maybe hoarded is a better description. Somewhere in the inner western suburb of Sydney’s Summer Hill, there is a brightly coloured collection of garden gnomes on display. The owner of the home is yet to be seen, but there are hundreds of gnomes, side by side, all with equally dopey expressions on their faces and accompanied by a second fixation: caterpillar soft toys. Having just finished a collaboration with Marchesa, jewellery designer Pamela Love’s gothic-inspired line has been picked up by the likes of Erin Wasson, among other celebrity fans. Referencing both nature and science, Love has created a line that is both rock n’ roll and earthy, with talons, claws, peacocks, rams and bear heads all featuring heavily.

This is interesting. Governments worldwide should be looking at this and take action to curb their CO2 emissions.
