Duran Duran live in Central Park
Oh man! My ears are still ringing with the sweet, sweet sounds of The Reflex, Rio and Save A Prayer. I caught Duran Duran playing the other night in New York’s Central Park, on a night when a light coating of drizzle dulled the sky, but not the mood of a fervent crowd who sang along to every damn word of every damn song. Forget the 80s cliches, these guys are just as vital now as they were when they filled stadiums.

I had the pleasure of seeing Duran Duran play a few weeks back in the balmy drizzle of New York’s Central Park. I always thought the guys had more cheek than they were ever given credit for. But don’t be fooled! For a band so rooted in the immediacy of disposable pop, they wrote some timeless songs, none more so than The Chauffeur.

George Michael’s sold out Madison Square Garden comeback concert on Wednesday seemed like the biggest dance party of the summer. The day after, I couldn’t resist going onto iTunes and get his Too Funkey music video. The original supermodels, not just beautiful but also all powerful women- walk down the runway in, none other than the 90s design genius Thierry Mugler’s clothings. Peter Nalitch is Russia’s answer to Manu Chao. His video for the song Guitar is a Borat-like jab at low-budget, post-Soviet awkwardness — absurd English lyrics, Eurotrash earnestness, bad wipes, and cheap subtitles. But its tongue-in-cheekness is quite apparent, and the song is disarmingly catchy and romantic.
Ok, so I’m wearing this sweater right now. How could I not. The damn thing shares the same name as me. Well, kinda. My parents threw in an ‘o’ into my name just to confuse the life out of people. But that’s a whole another story. The Zoltan is comfortable, soft, and colorful. It has ‘no fortune-telling capabilities’, but the ‘lightweight progressive color stripe scheme has an undeniably funky 70s vibe’. And it does. Yeeha. Now, where the hell is my bell bottoms and Grateful Dead vinyl?
We spoke to Dopepope about his latest Metal Man Project: ‘In the fifth grade, I drew a comic called Metal Man about a humanoid robot that went crazy and pulled knives on people. It’s the most ridiculous thing ever. I was a kid! Anyway, I found the artwork and simply traced the head and the logo exactly as I had them and fell in love with the iconic shapes they’ve created’.
