Darker My Love
A swirling mix of reverb-drenched guitars, pounding rhythms and beautiful, stratosphere-scraping harmonies, Darker My Love are returning with their ironically titled sophomore effort, 2. With Dave Cooley (Silversun Pickups) responsible for production duties and new member, Will Canzoneri, manning the organ and claviet, this eleven track record will stick in your head long after the needle has left the groove. 2 will be released in the US on August 5 courtesy of Dangerbird Records. With the band comprising of Los Angeles and San Francisco residents, Darker My Love plan to unveil their polychromatic LP with dual-hometown residencies throughout July. Which will culminate in two back-to-back album release shows in San Francisco (The Independent) on August 5th and Los Angeles (Troubadour) on August 7th.

In this new Series Powhida’s aptly named fictional character, Powhida, flees the New York Art World for a stab at destroying LA, indulging in all of our favorite vices, booze, coke, sex and sometimes art. We read about this debauchery in Powhida’s trompe l’oeil notebook pages, newspaper articles and obsessive lists. I even found myself enjoying an issue of 944. Incredible! Lisa Jane Persky takes beautiful, beautiful, photographs. To be fair, she also took my book jacket photo, but that doesn’t make her work less amazing. She covers a ton of ground: visit her site to look at vintage, CBGB’s era Debbie Harry, but stay for everything else.
No Age are doing something different to the mass of noise-laden, guitar-drum duos canvasing the lo-fi airwaves at the moment. I’m just not sure quite what. Their album, Nouns, is receiving top-rate reviews after sell-out crowds after screaming, obsessive fans. The music is simply massive: a vast landscape of heat haze, somehow both tranquil and manic, punctuated by singer Dean Sprouts backdrop of barely intelligible vocals and Randall’s distorted, archaic sounding drums.
I have a weak spot for the work of New York illustrator You Byun. Her pastel, Miyazaki-esque landscapes populated with their saucer eyed creatures just make me swoon. It reminds me of several other well-known illustrators working today, but I feel that she is onto something spectacular that will simply continue to evolve until we’re all just utterly blown out of the water.
The Loveless Cafe, a little oasis on the outskirts of Nashville, is like a refuge for the disenfranchised, serving up good ol’ southern cooking to a legion of America’s finest. Read more
