Darker My Love
A swirling mix of reverb-drenched guitars, pounding rhythms and beautiful, stratosphere-scraping harmonies, Darker My Love are returning with their ironically titled sophomore effort, 2. With Dave Cooley (Silversun Pickups) responsible for production duties and new member, Will Canzoneri, manning the organ and claviet, this eleven track record will stick in your head long after the needle has left the groove. 2 will be released in the US on August 5 courtesy of Dangerbird Records. With the band comprising of Los Angeles and San Francisco residents, Darker My Love plan to unveil their polychromatic LP with dual-hometown residencies throughout July. Which will culminate in two back-to-back album release shows in San Francisco (The Independent) on August 5th and Los Angeles (Troubadour) on August 7th.

I ran a series of 80s nights in New York last year — showing cult 80s movies and playing classic cuts from that era of kitsch and spice — purely so I could spin After The Fire’s Der Kommissar over and over. Yessir, this was the future of music in 1983. Pity no one was listening.
For some reason it’s rare that you see London in this light. Nightscapes of big cities are usually reserved for New York and Tokyo, for example. Perhaps the comparatively scarce skyscrapers makes the city less photogenic in that respect. So photographer Jason Hawkes’ work is long overdue — he has really brought the city to life, and given it that lick of golden light that a long-exposure is good for.
These scarves designed by Sarah Swash and her boyfriend Toshio Yamanaka always feature their whippet and play on a sense of urban sophistication inspired by the surrounds of their East London studio. Definitely a justified indulgence.

This remarkable construction is located in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi and is built entirely from scratch every year. It features 10,000 tonnes of ice from the nearby Torne River, and 30,000 tonnes of snow, covering more than 30,000 square feet in total. Oh, it even has its own ice chapel. When I did the Master Cleanse diet a few years ago — the one where you consume nothing but lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper for ten days — I sat at work looking at pictures of food as if they were porn. Scanwiches would have gotten me hot and bothered like nothing else.
While I am as impressed as anyone with an artist’s ability to render accurate and lifelike human figures, I’m more often compelled aesthetically by looser and more stylized images such as Camilla Engman’s. The wide-set eyes, bulbous bodies, and skewed proportions of the people and animals in Engman’s paintings lend them a certain expressiveness and melancholy. Read more
