They released a new song titled Everyone Nose on their Billionaire Boys Club blog on January 22 that was confirmed at SXSW to be the first single from the album. From April to June, the band will tour with Kanye West as an opening act along with Rihanna and Lupe Fiasco as part of the Glow in the Dark Tour. They have been confirmed to play the 2008 Isle of Wight festival on June 13, 2008, as special guests to the Kaiser Chiefs. They have also been confirmed to play on the Projekt Revolutions UK show at Milton Keynes Bowl supporting the two headliners, Linkin Park and Jay-Z.

The Ritz’s The Night of Day

The Ritz is a Chicago-based underground hip-hop duo comprised of Apoc and Rel. For their first full-length album — The Night of Day — they took their inspiration from the themes and aesthetics of 1940s and 50s film noir, with Rel creating a collection of beats that demonstrate his range as a producer. Apoc handles the majority of the rapping, jumping seamlessly from one style to the next as the album shifts tone and tempo.

Why are we not perfect?

Released in 2008, Why Are We Not Perfect? presents three Jesu tracks originally issued on a split EP with the ambient act Eluvium during the previous year. As with the Silver and Lifeline EPs, Why Are We Not Perfect? finds Jesu mastermind Justin Broadrick pushing his heavy aesthetic further into more melodic territory with their track Farewell, in particular, marked by epic synth washes and the title song carried largely by soft vocals and a lopping drum track. The Kevin Ayers record Joy of a Toy from 1969 was released by Harvest Records and sits somewhere between Nick Drake and The Byrds. A record slightly ahead of its time, it was filled with enough interesting and clever arrangements and instrumentation to never bore. Girl on a Swing is my favorite tune for the tremolo guitar.

Ok, some random news and observations about this thriving, jiving metropolis that is New York City. 1. There are that many tattoos around Williamsburg, Brooklyn that I reckon I’m making more of a statement by not having one! Seriously. People nod at me on the street as if to say, ‘cool man, I love that clean skin. Where’d ya get it done?’ Read more

Having originally sprung from the Shaky Isles (otherwise known as New Zealand), I can appreciate the humour in the New Zealand cartoon series, Bro Town, the first homegrown animated series to screen during local prime time. It’s simply brilliant, a real play on the ‘thuck’ accent and small town ways of our Kiwi brethren.

The pre-revolution artwork of Xiaoqing Ding

New York-based artist Xiaoqing Ding’s work draws from traditional Sung Dynasty scroll paintings as well as from more recent forms, her figures looking as much like the cherubic babies in festive Chinese New Year art (known as Nian Hua) as they do the sultry flappers in cigarette ads in 1930s Shanghai. Her images have an ethereal and slyly erotic quality, referencing Chinese mythology, pre-revolution film, and subtly personal narratives. Read more

Patrick Gildersleeves

I’m a big fan of the vibrant, textured work of Brighton, England based illustrator Patrick Gildersleeves, who uses ‘pencil, felt tip pen and paint’ and is ‘inspired by the people of the world, patterns, paper, animals and plants’. He is a part of the Joyful Bewilderment group show at the new Rough Trade record store in London, opening October 2, 2008. Read more

Rich People’s Rooftops NYC

The wealthy of this cramped metropolis we call New York don’t have lavish backyards — they have rooftops. Jwilly’s Rich People Rooftops NYC set on Flickr documents the spaces where the uber-rich of Gotham throw their cookouts, compost their kitchen scraps, or lounge on hot summer days high above our humble heads. Liz Wolfe’s bunny tales

A master of juxtaposition, Canadian photographer Liz Wolfe has updated her site with her newest series which focuses on characters and confection. The photos are never what they first seem, revealing something a little more macabre on closer inspection: a meat tree, a diseased dear, a melting icy pole dripping blood. It’s all presented in hyper-real candy colours.
