Wayne Pate — aka Good Shape Design — is pretty inspirational. He worked his way up from a freelance designer, to having his own label, and starting Good Shape Design, to selling both his own work and the work of others; the most notable being Cody Hudson. He sells prints, homewares and artwork which are beautifully framed and presented.

Roll up, roll up for Nathan Ota’s A Touch Of Class
Our friends over at Paper Tiger have just released their first print of the new year, and we’re lovin’ it. It’s called a Touch of Class and is the work of artist, Nathan Ota, who had a recent solo show at Hollywood’s La Luz de Jesus gallery. Ota, whose earliest influences were Frank Frazetta calendars and Vampirella comics, primarily creates his work using acrylics and wood panel.
Using both highly rendered images and softer graphic design elements, Nate Frizzell weaves stories into his paintings that we all can see ourselves being a part of. Giclee print on Sommerset velvet archival paper 12”x20” in a limited edition of 25.
Portland artist Aijung Kim creates the most heartfelt and endearing comics and prints. A highly candid viewing experience at times both quiet and haunting, often as cozy and reassuring as a familiar friend. With a keen eye for folksy patterns and clean detail, Kim’s work is simply a treat to view.

I’ll admit it, on first listen and in a terrible figity mood, i jumped though the tracks, looking for the instant gratification of a big melody before switching to something else. Despite a few negative reviews from others also too quick to judge, the response to this album has been so astoundingly positive, it’s impossible to dismiss. Written after emerging from a period of social isolation and centered around issues of a man and his dying lover, The Antlers’ album, Hospice, slowly creeps up upon the listener. With delicately constructed chords and small movements, the journey of the album unravels loneliness, isolation and deep catharsis.
It takes guts to be simple. Overcrowding, overworking and over-thinking are far easier. London-based artist and illustrator James Joyce shows how good color choice, clever concepts, and a keen eye for type can get you work with big clients, such as Wallpaper, Nike and Penguin Books, to name a few. I can tell how much I like a designer by the the speed at which I bookmark their site. With Rob Lowe (aka Supermundane), it was on the home page. That’s a pretty good sign. Supermundane is a multi-disciplined creative who impressively creates all text himself for every project he does. Prepare yourself to be jealous.

Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. Breakbeat duo, Evil Nine’s new album, They Live!, is one of the standout releases of the year. They Live! is powerful second album after 2005’s, You Can Be Special Too, its gruesome lyrics paying homage to all those misunderstood zombies out there. The duo — Automatom and Pardytron — compiled a Secret Playlist for us, writing about their eight favourite songs right now. Their first selection? Why, Toto’s Africa, of course [listen below]: ‘The epitome of smooth music, words can’t express how much this song rules!
