Christopher Norris
When asked to describe his work to a stranger, Christopher Norris writes: ‘Pencil and ink drawings that hinge abjectly on transgressive statements, haunted house imagery and thick seeming minimalism, hopefully projecting an awkward but propelling narrative’. The New York-based illustrator is a hugely talented creative whose work always balances humor with art. His prints have proved popular on Threadless, a seemingly endless breeding ground for up and coming designers.

I met Caroline Thaw at Brooklyn’s Third Ward in one of the courses I taught. The first time I saw samples of her work, I was happily overwhelmed by her diversity of styles, her cute yet twisted characters, the radiant and infinite beauty in every piece she made, her delicate line, and her strong sense of style and scenographic space. Part of her work’s charm comes from her experience in theater design designing sets and custumes for productions that traveled around the world (she is from England, originally), and her tremendous love for kids.

Megan Russell’s patterned illos
Maryland’s MICA just seems to be cranking out the talent this year! Recent grad, Megan Russell, creates quite lovely, intricate, densely pattern-based illustrations. With a polished portfolio that runs the gamut from editorial to set design to fashion, she is clearly a versatile illustrator. Be sure to check out her Narrrative-Book section as there are some especially wonderful illustrations composed of multiple vignettes colliding all over the page to create quite lively narrative tapestries. Despite a few negative reviews from others also too quick to judge, the response to this album has been so astoundingly positive, it’s impossible to dismiss. I can tell how much I like a designer by the the speed at which I bookmark their site. With Rob Lowe (aka Supermundane), it was on the home page. That’s a pretty good sign. Supermundane is a multi-disciplined creative who impressively creates all text himself for every project he does. Prepare yourself to be jealous.

A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Though most people in the West think of mahjong as a mysterious game old Chinese people play, it’s actually gets quite rowdy when people get together to play it. Rowdy is certainly a good adjective for Mahjongg, the exquisitely danceable electro-whatever outfit from Chicago who draw as much from Afrobeat as they do vocoder-laden sleaze rock from the 70s.

Ok, so I’m speaking from first-hand perspective here because as I type on this warm morning, with the faintest slither of sun creeping its way through the privacy blinds in my living room, I’m wearing the very same t shirt that the dude in this photo is wearing. Yup, the same damn one. Perhaps I’m not looking quite as groomed as he is, but hey, it’s a start. Australian fashion label Das Monk is my new favourite t shirt label and this t shirt is more comfortable to wear that a thousand pairs of Ozone socks. Das Monk? Yes it is.

Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.
