Music / Sonotipo

Sonotipo is a Buenos Aires-based band that produce a smooth combination of pop, rock and electronic music. Somewhat dark and melancholic, their music has a sweet beat to it that makes you want to dance all night long. Ciro Cavalotti and Sebastian Quintana are the musicians behind it, with guest musicians such as the Argentinian legend Daniel Melero.

Plastic Operator

The indie, electronic pop duo Plastic Operator paired up whilst studying audio production at London’s Westminster University. In 2004, they released their first three track EP. Their music reminds me of bands like The Fashion, Crystal Castles and Cut Copy.

Michel Lagarde

I was recently visiting my friend Michel Lagarde, an illustration agent and publisher in Paris, and besides falling in love with his amazing collection of drawings by artists like Sempé, Georges Lepape, and Ronald Searle, I fell for the small collection of comic books he has just published. The cover design is modern-retro using vibrant colors, the size is small enough to carry them around, and the black and white drawings by eight different artists are funny and beautiful. This is one of the best bands I’ve ever heard. I’m from Argentina and I love their pop dark music. They are a pearl from Buenos Aires Underground scene.

You hear the words ‘unique’ and ‘original’ thrown around quite a lot these days. I use them myself regularly. But every now and then you find an artist who truly deserves those terms to be used in relation to their work. Travis Louie is one such artist. Read more

I spent the formative first six years of my life in Wellington, New Zealand, a beautiful windswept city framed by a magnificent harbour in one direction and a stunning collection of green, rolling hills in the other. Read more

These very sweet folks from Seattle supported Broken Social Scene on our last American dates of the Spirit IF tour. Although they haven’t quite hit their stride as a live outfit, the tunes from songwriter Grant Olsen have some very lovely moments that fall somewhere between Velvet Underground and The Everly Brothers. I think Arthur and Yu could take over from where Grandaddy left off, though with better songs. No offense to Grandaddy.

Mexican architecture firm Senosiain Arquitectos recently designed a shell-shaped dwelling for a Mexico City couple. The owners are already living in their new abode with their two very happy children. The structure is maintenance-free and earthquake proof, and is full of soothing greenery and smooth, rounded surfaces. Read more
