Dargerism show at American Folk Art Museum
Sounds like a museum for grandma? Sorry, you’re wrong. The quiet neighbor of superstar MOMA, the American Folk Art Museum in New York in fact has lots of really cool, contemporary and edgy shows, sometimes even more so than the MOMA itself. Dargerism, a show that just opened up in mid-April features contemporary fine artists who are influenced and inspired by outsider art genius Henry Darger (1892-1973). It’s one of the most clever and fun shows I’ve seen in a while.

Chris Rubino at New York’s Heist Gallery
New York’s Heist Gallery, situated in the city’s steamy Lower East Side, is presenting the work of Chris Rubino, a versatile artist who has created a vast array of imagery through illustration, printing, graphics and photography. The simplicity and flattened forms that dominate his visuals capture pieces of our daily language in minimal forms. For his solo exhibition at Heist, titled Make Believe Maple Leaves, Rubino incorporates the written word into a complex world of iconic lexicon, drawing from process-oriented sketchbook drawings created over the course of one year. Rubino infuses his creations with color using pastel, paint, colored pencil and printmaking. Exuding a faster yet less mechanized energy, this body of work mirrors the way we process imagery and information today. Read more

I look at so much art, it’s rare that I see something that ‘wows’ me. But I love bumping into that rare moment. I was doing photo research (nothing related to meat) and bumped into Victoria Reynolds’ work. WOW. Gross-ugly-beautiful. I especially love the ones in matching meaty looking frames.

Chloe Aftel’s artistic vision is to ‘create new worlds filled with beauty and emotion through the medium of moving pictures’. Her photography initially consisted of one-frame movie stills, but it evolved into less production design-heavy, but still highly evocative, scenes with a strong narrative. She prefers to shoot with Polaroid film. With each shot and each subject, she attempts to capture an effortless sensuality and intimacy, focusing on the precise moment the image took place. Read more
