Biodegradable Bamboo phone
Dutch designer Gert-Jan van Breugel was a finalist for this year’s Greener Gadgets Design Competition, and though he didn’t win, we think his biodegradable bamboo phone is the bees’ knees. Breugel’s phone is not only made out of biodegradable-renewable bamboo, but it’s powered by the kinetic energy generated by user’s motion. When the phone is to be disposed of, the user removes the battery, antenna, and keypad, and throws the casing into the compost heap, where seeds embedded in the shell generate new bamboo shoots. You can’t get much more green than that.

There was a time, many moons ago, when I would only listen to bands off New Zealand’s Flying Nun label. Yup, I would strap myself into a comfy chair, put my headphones on and, armed with a chunk of chocolate coated Peanut Slab and a can of L&P, soak up album after album of wonderfully self-indulgent low-fi melancholy. Here’s another commercial building, and no doubt a nice one too. But just another commercial building. Yet there is something different here and it’s in the materials used. The cladding is a fibre-reinforced polymer, or a FRP, and has a finish similar to that of a car. Read more
We asked Ham and Pete, from New York band The Walkmen, to give us the rundown on the music that is inspiring them right now and they started off with a track from that elder statesmen of indie folk, Bonnie Prince Billy, Goin’ to Acapulco: ‘He did a remarkable job of putting a unique spin on a classic. It’s no small feat, and it’s a really impressive version’. Read more of The Walkmen’s Secret Playlist.
