Biodegradable Bamboo phone

Dutch designer Gert-Jan van Breugel was a finalist for this year’s Greener Gadgets Design Competition, and though he didn’t win, we think his biodegradable bamboo phone is the bees’ knees. Breugel’s phone is not only made out of biodegradable-renewable bamboo, but it’s powered by the kinetic energy generated by user’s motion. When the phone is to be disposed of, the user removes the battery, antenna, and keypad, and throws the casing into the compost heap, where seeds embedded in the shell generate new bamboo shoots. You can’t get much more green than that.

Luke Butler’s Enterprise series

My roommate is on a big Star Trek kick, re-watching the entire original series. I forgot how amazing and progressive and ahead-of-its-time it was. Actually, Star Trek: the Next Generation is also just as good. Hopefully Luke Butler will paint images from that series next or superimpose Captain Picard’s head on a nude body of Adonis. Read more

Knuckleheads is a pretty fun little side scrolling game where you’re a pair of Mexican-wrestler-looking things attached to each other by a chain. You swing each other around to move and hit floaty capsule things for points, and you can change the length of the chain to get over various obstacles, but watch out for the bats.

Sparks’ album Kimono My House is a demented mix of hard rock, pop, glam, new wave, and baroque pop. Why this record never caught on in the States I’ll never know. The songs will get stuck in your head and prevent you from sleeping. Oh yeah, and the keyboard player has a nice mustache too, as evidenced by this track above — This Town Ain’t Big Enough.

DFA Records need little introduction to dancefloor devotees, but Hold On, a recent release by lesser known artist Holy Ghost!, may not be on the radar just yet. It will be though: we nominate it for track most likely to receive stereo overplay.
