We need a New York-based album reviewer

If you’re a writer living in Gotham City and reckon you could manage your weight in CDs every month, then we’d love to hear from you. Yup, we’re after a New York-based album reviewer to wade through the piles of CDs we have and make some sense out of what’s hot and happening and what isn’t. So if you’re interested, drop us a note via the Contact Us page. Heck, it could be a match made in musical heaven.

Check out our sister site, My Secret Playlist, where our favorite musicians and DJs write about the music that's inspiring them right now.

Power Hog Piggy Bank

Now, this is clever. The Power Hog Piggy Bank is a ‘power consumption metering piggy bank designed to sensitize kids to energy cost associated with running electronics devices’. Just plug the little fella’s tail into a power outlet, then with every coin deposit, you get thirty minutes of electricity. Made from Sabic resin, the Power Hog is totally recyclable. Yes, yes, it’s electric. But naturally so.

Cook. Eat. Drink. Live? Yes, yes, yes

I had a delectable time at the Cook. Eat. Drink. Live foodie event in New York a few weeks back, sampling the wares of an eclectic range of goodies, eating way too much chocolate (though, really, how much is way too much?), and drinking enough wine to fill up the belly of a small, albeit plump, hamster. And I came out of the experience, the lip-smackingly, hip-shakingly fun experience, with just one simple conclusion: the world needs more of these events, where the only objective is to stuff your gullet and drink, drink, drink. Next please! [photos by Alison Zavos] Read more

Asleep On The Subway

You know the feeling: your eyes are getting heavy, heavy, your brain is switching off. And the next thing you know, or you don’t know, as the case may be, you’re a drooling, snoring mess on the R train into Manhattan. Oh, what’s that? That’s just me? Nope. It’s not. There’s a whole website devoted to capturing people at their most vulnerable moment, Asleep On The Subway. The indignity, the shame! We like. Read more

Rainbows shooting out of toilets. Trashcans everywhere. And what could possibly be a certain part of the female anatomy. Hmmm. My somewhat juvenile sense of humor is totally with New York-based illustrator and designer, Jesse Kuhn.

As a child, I took piano exams in over-sized white rooms, on baby grand pianos that felt unfamiliar and echoed strangely as someone across the room observed me in silence. It felt clinical, intimidating and completely devoid of warmth. Last week, I started noticing upright pianos, some painted haphazardly, others respectfully untouched plonked in the most unlikely places throughout Sydney. There was one on the edge of the baby pool at the local swimming pool, with a young girl in a rainbow striped dress tapping out a happy but disjointed melody; another shaded under a tree at the park on the way home. Canada seems to be the land of amazing ambient metal duos. Montreal has Menace Ruine, and Toronto has Nadja, a formidable couple that churns out huge-sounding, bass and electronics-driven doom that draws your gaze up towards the stars just as old cathedral ceilings humble the faithful and make them think of the Almighty.

A survey of two thousand Britons has revealed the country’s perfect pet. Max is a bizarre hybrid that is part cat, part dog, part rabbit and part horse. Insurance firm More Than, which conducted the research, suggests that Max ‘has high energy levels, loves daily walks and sleeps for an average of nine hours 27 minutes a day’. Read more

I love the rock and roll! I love the sheer coarseness of it all, the sweet rambling mayhem that a standard guitar set-up and Marshall amps stacked to the roof can generate. The audacity of it. Read more

Back in the day, when I was a skinny teenager on the great pedestal of life, I had a real obsession for the understated, low-fi, deliciously melodic and somewhat blurry sounds of the New Zealand Flying Nun bands. I would pool my meagre savings and canvas the local record shops, scouring the racks for the latest cassettes from The Bats, The Chills, The Clean, and, later, The Straitjacket Fits. Read more

The Swimmers

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
