Christine Tran’s Homesick
The work of Baltimore-based photographer Christine Tran reveals layers of buried meaning in its exploration of memory, nostalgia, loss and longing. Of this photo series, she says: ‘A couple of years ago, I moved from one coast to another, away from a place that held all the signifiers of home. As a direct result, this series of photographs emerged. They are about the confusion of physically being in one place, while belonging socially and emotionally to another. The images are of people and places close to me, yet they are staged. Like the effects of distance and the daydream of home, the distinction between memory and reality is blurred, and my photographs exist as both fact and fiction’.

This one in Kemi, northern Finland, is the world’s largest snow castle, standing seventeen metres high and with walls that are 1,100 metres long. It has restaurants, an art gallery, a hotel and a chapel. In fact, since opening in the early 1990s, it’s been quite a hit for tourists to get married at the snow chapel. The philosophy of a beginning is to me, a wonderful concept. I really enjoy flicking through the back catalogues of a musician and discovering their origin, then tracing their musical journey to the present. So for American-born, Paris-based sister duo CocoRosie, who released their third album The Adventure of Ghosthouse and Stillborn to much acclaim, making the trip to their beginnings is more than worth the journey: their debut album, Le Maison de Mon Reve (released back in 2004) was a gentle stroll through their pop and classical influences, which melt together seamlessly into a backdrop for their unique and enchanting voices.
