Illustration / Yuko speaks in Philly
New York-based illustrator, and regular Lost at E Minor contributor, Yuko Shimizu is heading to Philadelphia to give a lecture and attend the opening of an exhibition of her illustrations at The University of The Arts this Thursday. The University of The Arts is the only university in America dedicated exclusively to the visual, performing and media arts. The show will feature about twenty of Yuko’s illustrations as well as some of her original drawings and sketches. She will also present a lecture for about an hour and half in which she will talk about her work and give advice to aspiring illustrators and people interested in illustration. The lecture starts at 1pm at the CBS Auditorium with the reception on at Broad Street’s Von Hess Gallery between 2.30 and 3.30. If you’re in the area, it would be well worth getting along and checking it out.

Another smokin’ hot New York illustrator
I met Caroline Thaw at Brooklyn’s Third Ward in one of the courses I taught. The first time I saw samples of her work, I was happily overwhelmed by her diversity of styles, her cute yet twisted characters, the radiant and infinite beauty in every piece she made, her delicate line, and her strong sense of style and scenographic space. Part of her work’s charm comes from her experience in theater design designing sets and custumes for productions that traveled around the world (she is from England, originally), and her tremendous love for kids.

Alan Warburton’s food and politics series
Cambridge artist Alan Warburton collaborated with a non-art audience to produce this series of work in which he asked volunteers to use fruit to explain politics: ‘In Caracas, Venezuela, volunteers explained the complex and lively political scene using melons, and in Cambridge, diverse residents used locally picked apples to explain the issues that affect the city’, he says of how the series unfolded. The work of Washington DC-artist Michael Dotson goes a ways to satisfying my insatiable colour sweet tooth. His work makes my eyes light up. Colour aside, Dotson’s cleanly simplified, geometric renderings of various spaces are a treat. Often abstract to the extent that it’s difficult to truly interpret the space, it ultimately leaves the imagination with something to chew on. Read more

Florida-based artist, Andy Espinoza, studies at the Ringling College of Art and Design, majoring in Illustration. His paintings are beautifully conceptualised, rich in narrative and technically impressive. Of his work, he says: ‘I see each human figure as a unique challenge. I am coaxed to find the unique relationship between the shapes and tones that give the particular subject its subtle appeal and unrepeatable vitality. My paintings are not photographic representations of my subjects, but rather are my elaboration of what I find to be of value in them’. Read more

I like Roots Manuva because he tells stories.
