Cordial Christ Blues
In the current series of paintings, Cordial Christ Blues, to be unveiled in an exhibition at Sydney’s Arthouse Gallery between April 9 and 26, local artist Damien Kamholtz creates a frisson between faith and fable. The knowing innocence of Alice in her Wonderland meets the wisdom and forbearance of heroic sagas from the Bible. The great and mythic stories that are high moral tales of the conflict between good and evil are played out on canvasses washed with pale glazes that reveal as in shadowed memories, the ghosts of supplicants. The iconic ritual of halos and the key players of Christ and the Madonna are there with a minor cast of saints but while they show us faces of beauty and innocence there is a predatory darkness that glitters in the wings of this theatre that is both sacred and profane.

James Jirat Patradoon at the First Draft Gallery
Stranglehold, at Sydney’s First Draft Gallery, is an exhibition of new drawings and screenprints by James Jirat Patradoon, exploring his take on fantasy hyper-masculinity with portraits inspired by slasher movie villains, pro wrestlers, biker gangs, and Elvis. This series examines notions of deferred mascullinities: confused and misdirected rites of passage informed more by cartoons and action heroes than by reality itself. Drawn in a style influenced by the comics and cartoons of his youth, Jirat Patradoon’s images of fist-fights and tough-guy bravado consider the idea of violence as the purest form of masculine statement and its integral place in the male mythos. The controversial and multifaceted International contemporary art exhibition Trailblazers hits Sydney this month. Boutwell Draper Gallery will grace multimedia works by pioneering Australian, American and European artists from November 19 onwards. I’m thrilled to see groundbreaking pieces by Ben Frost, Kill Pixie, Copyright and Cleon Patterson [above], to name a few. The vast array of paintings, photography, sculpture, installation, video and digital arts is on display until December 13. C’mon, you know you want to culture your soul.

New Banksy artwork angers the Catholic Church
Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design
Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Instead of demolishing the old Paddington Reservoir, architects TZG have incorporated into the design a new outdoor public garden in Paddington, Sydney. The results are stunning, with the nineteenth century structures providing an amazing starting point. Looking less like a garden and more like an overgrown ancient city, with the remnants of historic walls and vaults, this new public space is well worth frequent visits.
The Occasional Diaries Of Werner Herzog is a spoof online diary for German film director, Werner Herzog. Although they’re all fiction, I enjoy reading them as much as if they were genuine. Read more
Oh, ok. The Church’s eerily translucent Under The Milky Way has just burst into my headphones like a thousand jolts of sweet pop lightening. It’s nice to know that wistful introspection is only ever but three chords and a melancholic chorus away.

My boyfriend is your typical guy who likes wearing nice clothes, but has no patience for shopping.
