Stephanie Simek’s jewellery
The latest in the Stephanie Simek jewellery collection is the Powder necklace, a pearlized Turbo Cinereus shell with tiny holes drilled into the bottom and filled with a sparkling silver-colored powder. When gently tapped, the shell sprinkles a light dusting on the wearer’s chest. A natural cork fits snugly into the opening of the shell, acting as a stopper. Now, that’s what I call an idea.

The bling era has been and gone, and in its wake is jewellery that’s designed to express individual style, not bank balances. Among this new wave of designers is Sydney-based Matt Weston. His pieces have been making it into sought after magazines and advertisements for years. But it’s his latest collection that really got our attention. Mixing a tribal feel in seamlessly with his signature edgy street style, Weston does his thing with black suede, heavy metal, feathered charms, white rope and knotted chains. And the result? Having just finished a collaboration with Marchesa, jewellery designer Pamela Love’s gothic-inspired line has been picked up by the likes of Erin Wasson, among other celebrity fans. Referencing both nature and science, Love has created a line that is both rock n’ roll and earthy, with talons, claws, peacocks, rams and bear heads all featuring heavily.
It’s official, I’m back into jewellery after detoxing from the 2001 chandelier earring craze. Aurélie Bidermann used to work at Sotheby’s New York in their Impressionist and Contemporary Art department but has been slowly raising though the ranks as one of the most innovative jewellery designers around today. I’ve just discovered the work of Arien Valizadeh and I’m very impressed. His Iranian-American background (he studied under a master Farsi Calligrapher) has shaped his artistic vision, which maintains the classical presence of Persian figurative painting. If that’s all too much, then explore his use of print and pattern and the dramatic color schemes he employs.
While I’m definitely not into the whole Lord of the Rings thing, I’m convinced Tolkien stole his inspiration from Göreme, in Turkey’s central Cappadocia region. After a mammoth volcanic eruption around 2,000 years ago, the landscape eroded to form a series of valleys, filled with peculiar, phallic-shaped tufts that the locals call ‘fairy chimneys’. Early Christians hollowed out the tufts and turned them into houses, churches and monasteries. These days, most of them are still in use and a few have been converted into cute hotels and hostels. If you’re not too claustrophobic, I’d highly recommend doing the hobbit thing and spending a night in one.

Brian Bress is my art obsession at the moment. I recently saw his show at the LFL gallery in New York, and his collages and photographs were so striking, modern and funny that I couldn’t stop staring at them.
Unlike a lot of other web comic artists, the guys at Team Society League can actually draw well. They’re also freaking hilarious. Seriously, can you top pulling God’s finger?
Oh man, my eyeballs feel like they’re dropping out of my head. This clip is pyschedelic in a way that platform shoes and polyester shoes could never be. The Faint are the shizz, and that’s the truth.
I’m sitting here listening to this Switch Remix of the Jacknife Lee track Making Me Money with a mind that’s buzzing from an extra strong cup of Colombian coffee and a foot that’s tapping so fast the damn thing may well drop off. Oh boy, just try getting this cracking beat out of your head.
