Cut Copy’s In Ghost Colours
It was late afternoon in Sydney on a rare sunny summer’s day when I pressed play on Cut Copy’s latest album, In Ghost Colours, and immediately felt like I was in the midst of an awesome chilled out holiday. Hooked from track one, with the pop perfection of Feel the Love, I spent the next hour nodding my head to the trans-electro tapestry of emotional highs and lows, all encompassed by a smooth steady beat that drives each song with a sense of reckless love. Fans of Cut Copy stand united: we have a winner.

Melbourne illustrator Rik Lee creates images as if they were a delicate easter egg. Faces, animals, bikes — they’re all rendered with the same light touch, with some interesting juxtapositions with the pastel smeared throughout, like make-up after a night on the town.

New York-based Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu has been featured on Lost At E Minor several times over the past couple of years. I love the sense of drama her work conveys, the apparent colour clashes that somehow gel despite pre-existing rules about their compatibility. We checked in with her to see what she’s been up to of late: ‘I just came back from a week in Georgian Bay in Canada. No internet, no cell phone reception for a week. It was fantastic! Now I am getting ready for a group show at Visual Arts Gallery in New York that opens in September. I am creating two new 40” x 60” drawings. I’m also slowly refurbishing my website here and there’. Just checked them out on iTunes (can’t use Big Pond here unfortch) Great stuff! They are offering one of the tracks free for a limited time. “So Haunted” is the best ELO homage I have heard.
