Broadway, Nashville
Late on a Tuesday night, it’s hard to know what to expect arriving at a new destination. While other cities were sleepily shutting the doors and awaiting the new day, Nashville, Tennessee was just coming into full swing. Stages in bars along Broadway were being rocked by blues, rockabilly, country and rock ‘n’ roll bands, and the standard of live music was true to its pedigree. In a town that lives for music, the talent shone amongst the smoke, grit and fluorescent lights of bars ignited by centuries of exceptional musicians. It’s quite a place — there’s an incessant buzz through the air, passion within hearts and rhythmic tapping of boots. Music is in the blood in Nashville, and as an outsider looking in it feels like nothing will ever change that.

Despite their many layers and instruments — three guitars, bass, violin, viola, cello, piano, percussion, and multiple vocals — Nashville’s The Ascent of Everest never get weighed down by over-wrought compositions. Rather, they make sparse, evocative, and sweeping songs that stretch out like horizons, every element simple and elegant enough to interweave with another without overwhelming it.
Magic Wands are a burgeoning young duo playing some really fun music these days, and the most recent remix of Warrior sounds especially sweet to my ears this week. California’s Cerasoli:LeBasse Gallery has just moved to new digs on Washington Boulevard, Culver City. And to celebrate the re-launch they have an exhibition running featuring the work of Deth P Sun, Mari Inukai [above] and Melissa Haslam, amongst others. This inaugural exhibition, the aptly titled Blender, runs until November 1st.
We love the range of ultra-stylish ties created by New York-based designers, Ryan Sovereign and William Beck. They’re both graduates of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, majoring in Industrial Design and Sculpture respectively, and have been long time collaborators both musically and visually. I’m so digging the work of Santa Monica artist Andrew Hem. Painting seems to have become relegated in the illustration world these days, so I’m pleased to see Hem rocking it in a big way. His bold brushwork, lush colors, puppet-like figures and painted type make for a body of work that really hits the painted spot.

If you ever happen to find yourself riding across the mid-west on horseback with an iPod jangling about in your holster, be sure to let Calexico soundtrack the experience. They’re cleverly fusing a range of genres, mixing some good old country with US indie, a bit of jazz and even, in 2003’s Feast of Wire, some smatterings of electronica. Lead singer Joey Burns gives a healthy amount of cowboy twang and the soaring orchestral background and sweet country guitar licks add a real atmosphere to the music.

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
