Signal Morning ricochets across every raw nerve from the poppiest of impulses to the edge of ostensible sanity, without revealing a single cut corner or uninspired change.
The Almighty Defenders’ Bow Down and Die
This morning, Stereogum premiered the first slab of lo-fi gutter gospel from Vice Records super group The Almighty Defenders, a meeting of might between Atlanta garage goblins The Black Lips, Berlin-based soul punker King Khan, and Mr. BBQ himself, Mark Sultan. Conceived during the Lips’ Berlin exile (after their VBS documented ejection from India), the band’s self-titled debut is a madcap, liquor-drenched revival, a blissfully fucked up realization of one of garage rock’s most fitting collaborations. Bow Down And Die, the ‘booming, chivalrous third song’, is an off kilter, beer-swilling chant-along that borrows just as much from choral church music as it does from skuzzball rock n roll. Silver Summit make the sort of hazy psych-folk that would suit a long, night-time drive through the badlands. Incorporating an array of acoustic instruments, strings, slide guitar, and haunting female vocals into gossamer melodies, the collective sound like they hail from a dusty town on the Great Plains rather than their native Brooklyn.
Brooklyn-based illustrator Lisa Ramsey creates fantastic and elaborately themed comics, many of which are very tongue in cheek but always beautifully drawn.
On my recent visit to Barcelona, my love for Animal Farm led me to the Plaça de Geroge Orwell. There I discovered Oviso. The tiny café features hand painted walls and low wooden benches, where inhabitants enjoy great coffee for €1 and discuss music, beer, photography and the hordes of tourists that bustle just beyond the quiet square.
There was a time, many moons ago, when I would only listen to bands off New Zealand’s Flying Nun label. Yup, I would strap myself into a comfy chair, put my headphones on and, armed with a chunk of chocolate coated Peanut Slab and a can of L&P, soak up album after album of wonderfully self-indulgent low-fi melancholy. Converse kicks off its hundredth anniversary with 1HUND(RED), a special artist series with proceeds going to the Global Fund. The project is a year-long release of shoes designed by notable artists, including Auckland-based illustrator, Dennis Juan Ma, whose shoe [above] is number twenty in the series.
Unlike a lot of other web comic artists, the guys at Team Society League can actually draw well. They’re also freaking hilarious. Seriously, can you top pulling God’s finger?
