De Novo Dahl
Following on from their SXSW performance, we caught up with Joel J Dahl from Nashville band De Novo Dahl. How did SXSW go this year? ‘As far as what I can remember it was pretty good. I almost got in a couple fights for squirting people with a squirt gun. Nashville ruled Austin’. Your song ‘Sky Is Falling’ looks like it’ll be a big one off the album. What do you recall about the writing of the track? ‘I was feeling real ’60s. I had been watching a lot of “End of the World” programming on The History Channel. Apocalyptic Mumbo Jumbo was dominating the channel for a couple days when I was writing it. I suppose, maybe subconsciously, it had to do with the band falling apart prior to the recording of this record. We had a six piece and half the band quit all at once and it was easy to feel like the sky was falling. But like in Chicken Little, just because it seemed like the sky is falling didn’t mean it really was’. I love the album cover art. Who did it and how much autonomy did they have when creating the artwork? ‘The artist was Heisuke Kitazawa — aka PCP. He had quite a bit of freedom. I think he got a little defensive when the label had some issues with certain things, but the band all loved it from the get go. The Music Monster Pied Piper Leading the Children Through a Psychedelic Landscape was our original concept, but MEI definitely brought it home and we are very pleased with the artwork’.
