Amy Sol to speak at Perth Semi-Permanent

We’re big fans of the work of American illustrator, Amy Sol. So we were excited to hear that she’s winging over to Australia as a guest speaker at this year’s Perth Semi-Permanent, which is taking place on April 8. We asked her what she was expecting to find on her first visit to the country: ‘I’ve always wanted to visit. I loved to look at National Geographic articles about Australia when I was growing up and always hoped to actually visit someday. I don’t have any expectations at this point. I’m just looking forward to seeing the cities, maybe some wildlife, and perhaps meeting some cool people’. Read more

Harden The Flourish Up campaign by Block, Perth

What would happen if you shot a .223 Remington Express Rifle at a pile of paper? Then drove over the paper in a tank and quad bike? And then used the paper to create a promotion for your client? In Perth, Western Australia, a design studio called Block is taking popular printing and finishing techniques like embossing and foiling, and ramping up the voltage tenfold. The goal? To give the graphic design industry a very extreme makeover in a campaign for Spicers.

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV

The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend

Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

I wonder what randomly select really means…
Do you get a small child to choose? Or the whole ‘out of a hat’ thing…

The Los Angeles musician, Ariana Delawari — aka Lion of Panjshir — is half Afghan and half Sicilian and makes wonderfully enlightened weirdo folk rock. I hope she takes that as a compliment! Her music is delicate and powerful and she is a pure artist. Everything she does has that magic light in it. She made her new album partially in Afghanistan, and many of the lyrics deal with the continued oppression of people’s liberties by the Taliban.
