Illustration / John Malloy’s graphic novel
Illustrator and artist John Malloy has been working on a graphic novel called Channel One and, without wanting to sound too much like Paris Hilton, it’s looking pretty damn hot. Malloy says of the project: ‘I’ve been working on the book between commercial gigs, adding new pages when possible. This latest segment, titled Hidden Camera, introduces Ian — one of the primary characters — from the point of view of a hidden camera in his vest pocket’. Samantha Everton’s Vintage Dolls
Samantha Everton’s latest exhibition, Vintage Dolls, explores ‘history, race and culture through magic realism’. Of the series, Everton says: ‘I was inspired by the innocent act of children playing dress ups and the way they re-enact adult behaviour, concepts and themes, without preconceptions or judgement’. The show runs at the Dickerson Gallery, Melbourne, between March 4-22 and at the Dickerson Gallery in Sydney between April 1-19.

I fell in love with Anthony Goicolea’s wonderful drawings and photographs a few years ago when I stumbled upon his show at Postmasters Gallery in New York. His world is both arousing and disturbing, as visions of childhood nostalgia and innocence intermingle with darker more abusive subject matter. Read more
If Pharrell’s calling these guys ‘geniuses’, you’d better watch out! Chester French are Ivy League prep boys from Massachusetts who have mastered an interesting Beatlesque sound tinged with Motown influences. When, in May 2007, the duo — D.A. and Max — completed their recording and their degrees (in African American Studies and Social Anthropology respectively), they were snapped up by Pharrell Williams’ label Star Trak.

Summertime at McCarren Park in Williamsburg is picturesque. It’s often filled with a mix of people, old and young, picnicking or sitting in the shade, running along the track or playing soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from). It’s also connected to a now defunct McCarren (swimming) pool which transforms into an outdoor concert space on Sundays during the summer. Ten Masked Men are a British parody band that does death metal covers of famous pop songs by Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and many others. One of my favorites is their cover of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me a River’. It’s epic.
DJ Spooky — That Subliminal Kid — is just about the deepest crate digger around, trawling the barrels of long-lost record stores for choice vinyl to spin in his wickedly dubby sets. He gave us the inside word last week on his eight favourite songs right now via our sister website, My Secret Playlist. This is what he had to say about Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Panic in Babylon: ‘If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop. National Geographic just announced the Best Wild Animal Photos of 2008. They’re all stunning, but I’m particularly fond of the one of a frog refusing to become lunch for a snake. It looks like they’re eating each other. My number two is the black-crested macaque hanging out on a beach. Read more
