Beata Szczecinska
Splitting her time between the UK and her native Poland, Beata Szczecinska works under the name of Cityabyss and creates illustrations that are heavily influenced by the world of fashion, graphic arts, photography, design and modern cityscapes. Her works has been featured in publications such as Varoom Magazine, Computer Arts Magazine, Illusive 2 Book, Katalogue, Web Design Index, Castle Magazine, and Carpal Tunell Magazine, among others. Recently, she started a partnership with Warsaw-based art buying and production house, Alabama. [see also the work of French illustrator Sophie Toulouse]

From Shoreditch in London where works by the likes of Banksy, Invader and Sweet Toof live side-by-side – enlivening the streets with their subversive and eye catching design, to Berlin, where they’ve turned the notion of graffiti on its head by using jet sprays with stencils to clean parts of a dirty wall, producing a new piece of art. I checked out the Armory Show in Manhattan a couple of weeks back and amongst the aisles of impressive contemporary art I was particularly taken by the work of Japanese artist, Mahomi Kunikata, whose vibrant and colorful paintings are full of mischievous characters and ‘joy joy’ sentimentality.

A Melbourne native once said to me: to find the good bars, you have to look for the bins in alleyways. Section 8 totally fits that quota. It is a bar that is a. in an alleyway, and b. filled with trash. As enticing as that sounds, I must make it clear that the alleyway is actually an old carpark in Chinatown and the trash is not exactly trash. But don’t let that stop you. Section 8 is pumping. Filled with forklift pallets for your seating pleasure, this little bar-that-could (also known as the Container Bar) makes a refreshing beverage and plays super cool beats all night. Read more

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally.
