Michael Mararian at the Corey Helford Gallery
We’re excited about the upcoming Michael Mararian of M. Mararian’s Inky Dreadfuls exhibition of new works — Phobias, Foibles and Fiends — which is opening in July at Culver City, California’s Corey Helford Gallery: ‘The exhibition features an installation of over thirty macabre ink renderings which reflect a humorous, yet intensely personal examination of lost innocence in our modern society, dealing with psychological fears, character flaws, and complexes of the human id. Mararian magnifies the three different traits his subjects embody, “phobias, foibles, and fiends”. Each work is hand drawn in various ink forms, crudely brushed and scratched at times for a gritty, textured aesthetic, juxtaposing the virtuous image of a little child with a boldly exposed inner cruelty, Mararian creates humorous vignettes, fictitious moments of life captured in time’.

I think I need a metal secretary to keep me abreast of these things.

Setting Sun’s cover of Tom Petty’s You Got Lucky was recently released as part of Buffet Libre DJ’s compilation CD, Rewind 2. Says frontman, Gary Levitt, of their version on the song: ‘We got back from our European tour on Christmas Eve with a December 27th deadline for the track looming. It was finally started on December 26th and then sent off completed the next day. It was a great exercise in having to let some things go. British designer Emma Smart designed these cool papercraft lunchboxes that unfold into place settings. The boxes will be sold at ASDA supermarkets in the UK, and each of the three designs come packed with three different lunches.
Summertime at McCarren Park in Williamsburg is picturesque. It’s often filled with a mix of people, old and young, picnicking or sitting in the shade, running along the track or playing soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from). Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion.
