Michael Mararian at the Corey Helford Gallery
We’re excited about the upcoming Michael Mararian of M. Mararian’s Inky Dreadfuls exhibition of new works — Phobias, Foibles and Fiends — which is opening in July at Culver City, California’s Corey Helford Gallery: ‘The exhibition features an installation of over thirty macabre ink renderings which reflect a humorous, yet intensely personal examination of lost innocence in our modern society, dealing with psychological fears, character flaws, and complexes of the human id. Mararian magnifies the three different traits his subjects embody, “phobias, foibles, and fiends”. Each work is hand drawn in various ink forms, crudely brushed and scratched at times for a gritty, textured aesthetic, juxtaposing the virtuous image of a little child with a boldly exposed inner cruelty, Mararian creates humorous vignettes, fictitious moments of life captured in time’.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, they had Klaxon label-mates Volahn and Ashdautas in tow, ensuring pure auditory armageddon at every show. I think I need a metal secretary to keep me abreast of these things.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. Abounding with references to the natural world and its corresponding rhythms, Australian artist Eleanor Yap creates the most incredible tapestry-like drawings. Yap’s rorschach-styled images, through their soothing symmetry and allegiances to nature, really seem to put the mind at ease somehow, despite their intense density and lively colors. I must say I was truly disappointed in discovering that her online shop is at this time closed! Sigh.
Maverick artist come architect, Michael Jantzen, has created this fantastic experiment as a design study for a modular prefabricated eco-friendly house. Read more
