Music / Radio Citizen
I work in my studio at least ten hours a day, usually seven days a week. So a good collections of iTunes music is indispensable. I’m generally looking for an edgy sound that is stimulating and not distracting at the same time. Yes, I am picky. My recent favorite is the Radio Citizen album, Berlin Serengeti, a wonderfully creative and diverse electronica album which forms an ideal early evening to late night work soundtrack. Originally from Australia, Long Walk Home are now residing and making awesome music in Berlin. Their music is modern and alternative with a great guitarist and drummer and a touch of funky electro that makes the melodies soft and catchy.
Ok, so the guys who present the various shows on Internet radio station, Dublab, are remarkably hip. They kinda put my own living room mixes to shame. Though I’m yet to hear them work in a Flock Of Seagulls track. Yes, the 80s were so cool. Under the banner of ‘Future Roots’, the Dublab DJs throw world music, electronic, dub and garage rock together and come out the other end with a 24-hour playlist which is both fun and distracting. Who needs to work when you could be doing a spirited dubstep instead in the sanctity of your own apartment? I was one of the lucky thousands who got hold of this spoof New York Times yesterday morning near Penn Station. I had just finished breakfast at a restaurant with a friend, and for a second I totally believed war had ended wthin those few hours when I was not listening to NPR. Located by the Atlantic Avenue Station, in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, the BAM movie theaters are as genuine as it gets in New York when it comes to going to the movies. It features a small selection of the latest releases actually worth seeing, or you can immerse yourself in the BAMcinématek, which presents repertory classics, retrospectives, festivals, premieres, and rare films.
Australian group Pivot have recently signed with the mighty Warp label and — even better (well, for us anyway) — have written a fun Secret Playlist for us. You can see where the many disparate influences have seeped into their latest recording, the beautiful and colourful, O Soundtrack My Heart.
DJ Spooky — That Subliminal Kid — is just about the deepest crate digger around, trawling the barrels of long-lost record stores for choice vinyl to spin in his wickedly dubby sets. He gave us the inside word last week on his eight favourite songs right now via our sister website, My Secret Playlist. This is what he had to say about Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Panic in Babylon: ‘If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop. These stylish hoops of bronze have a profound effect on me. I’m seriously left singing If I Were A Boy Beyonce-style whenever I see them. Made by Stannard Inc, William the Brave bronze rings are stunning and the raw look exudes an air of individuality. But the cool thing is that you can actually get away with wearing them if you’re a chick, too. They’re made uni-sex in various sizes.
People are always looking to push the boundaries of street art, perhaps fed up with seeing the same (wild) style of graffiti over and over again. So, like Blu and Dan Witz, Julian Beever came into our lives like a breath of fresh air. His work is stunning, mind-boggling stuff: he manages to create a world ‘inside’ a pavement with his 3D pastel illustrations, tricking the eye into believing a dimension exists right below our very feet. National Geographic just announced the Best Wild Animal Photos of 2008. They’re all stunning, but I’m particularly fond of the one of a frog refusing to become lunch for a snake. It looks like they’re eating each other. My number two is the black-crested macaque hanging out on a beach. Read more
