DJ Damian Lazarus

This week, London-based DJ Damian Lazarus will be on the American side of the Atlantic playing his refined underground style in a few select cities. Involved with music at an early age, Lazarus began as a music reviewer, co-established the City Rockers label and eventually set up his own label, Crosstown Rebels. Having so much exposure to the music has allowed Lazarus to cultivate his own unique style, marked by flawless sets that Lazarus himself describes as ‘twisted, raw, deep underground techno’. In addition to Lazarus, Bill Patrick will be playing one last New York set before he permanently relocates to Europe.

Incredible Bongo Band: Apache

I was working in New York in the early seventies, walked into a club, and heard this. It’s been in my head ever since. I knew the song because it had been launched in the UK by The Shadows some ten years earlier, but this blew it away. Africa Bambaataa and Kool Herc and others gave me a new direction.

I’m stoked about Blik Wall Graphics recent collaboration with Hybrid-Design. Their newest decal, Animal Friendlies features smaller graphics so you can create a mini storytelling vignette right on your wall. Because of their size, they don’t overwhelm a space (especially when you don’t have a large one).

I love the colour and textures that permeate Brooklyn illustrator Ilana Kohn’s work. A Pratt graduate, Kohn ‘works mainly through combining traditional painting techniques with various manners of collage and occasional digital media’. Read more

Not much more needs to be said about this. Ricky Gervais, the funniest man in England, meets Larry David, the funniest man in America. Wit and genius collides. Very, very clever.

Alice in Wonderland-obsessives take note: the fantastical and whimsically surreal artist, Mark Ryden, will be signing copies of his latest book, The Tree Show, at the MOCA store in Los Angeles on Jan 31st. Read more

I used to have a Livejournal. I remember when blogging was so much more earnest and emo back in the mid-Aughts. Embarrassing. Good to know there are people like out_4_pizza, who use their blogs to post amazing digital art rather than every detail of their personal lives. Read more

Originally hailing from Kendal, Cumbria and now based in Leeds, the Wild Beasts foursome are the next hopefuls for Domino Records, who sent the group out to Sweden to record their first album, Limbo, Panto, released on June the 16th. The new single — The Devil’s Crayon — shimmers in wide-screen around a sense of location, melody and wonder at the scale of things. Indeed, it sounds like the theme song to a new kind of very English road movie.

Disorder Disorder in Sydney

Pitched as ‘Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art’, Disorder Disorder is running until November 14 at Penrith Regional Gallery. It’ll be well worth the trip out west of Sydney: the Australian, Japanese, American and European cast reads like a warriors of street art roundup and includes Mike Giant, Ed Templeton, Anthony Lister [artwork above], Ozzie Wright, and Jonathan Zawada. Yes, we’ve all been there: the chinese food from last week that still looks edible amongst the bare surrounds of an empty fridge. But really, we shouldn’t. Just let it be. Or College Humor will expose you! Read more
