Gina Bruce
‘Treelines and Shadows’, Gina Bruce‘s third solo exhibition, presents fresh images of the Australian landscape produced with an ancient method of painting, egg tempera. It is no surprise that Bruce knows well the places she based this work on, as the paintings exude warmth. Bruce is only 30 but has been a finalist in the prestigious Sulman Prize three years running. “Treelines and Shadows” runs from March 1-26 at the Robin Gibson Gallery in Sydney. Dog photography by Joanna Totolici
Fashion photographer, Joanna Totolici, has recently started a side project, Toto Photo, focusing on dog portraits, and she took some adorable photos of our Affenpinscher, Selma Lou. Selma can be a bit shy with strangers, but she proved to be a natural for the camera and Joanna was very patient and had great timing. Victorian Photocollage exhibition at the Met
Anyone who has seen my art knows about how endlessly inspired I am by macabre, Victorian art, and writing. Well, pass the smelling salts as the recently-opened Victorian Photocollage exhibition at the Met in New York makes me swoon. 48 works from 1850-1860 combine animal heads with human bodies (my favorites), or depict fantastical landscapes and other curiosities. Made primarily by aristocratic women to be shared amongst friends, the photocollages shed a unique perspective on how even the stuffiest members of society are able to express their creativity.
The Cerasoli:LeBasse Gallery’s relocation
California’s Cerasoli:LeBasse Gallery has just moved to new digs on Washington Boulevard, Culver City. And to celebrate the re-launch they have an exhibition running featuring the work of Deth P Sun, Mari Inukai [above] and Melissa Haslam, amongst others. This inaugural exhibition, the aptly titled Blender, runs until November 1st.

I recently stumbled across the beautiful work of Isreali artist Tal R in all it’s raw and colourful splendor. Rough, spontaneous texture, tapestry-like compositions, and artfully placed drips all come together within Tal’s folksy oeuvre. I can’t even really decide which I’m swooning over more — the Grosz-like paintings or his fantastically raw drawings. Read more

On my recent visit to Barcelona, my love for Animal Farm led me to the Plaça de Geroge Orwell. There I discovered Oviso. The tiny café features hand painted walls and low wooden benches, where inhabitants enjoy great coffee for €1 and discuss music, beer, photography and the hordes of tourists that bustle just beyond the quiet square.

I’ve been waiting for a group like this. These New Puritans are balls in your face, 100 miles an hour, pure attack! A young British group that has most of the UK press in the palm of their skinny pale hands, they hint at a sonic mash of Bloc Party mixed with what White Rose Movement were supposed to be. What more could you want?
