Lost AT E Minor

FOR WEEKLY INSPIRATION Why

Film / The Savages

What would you do you if your estranged and incontinent father, suffering from dementia, was suddenly launched back into your life? The Savage children, superbly played by Laura Linney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, decide on a nursing home, and this gritty reality is superbly handled. It begins in Arizona, the repetitious and mundane nature of existence nicely shot, giving a vivid picture of people waiting to die and the young who tolerate them for a pay check. Also wonderfully depicted is the discomfort of bystanders when faced with an elderly person unable to look after their own basic human functions. The nursing home is shown with surprisingly balance, so while we are presented with a stark, depressing environment, it is not without positives and it seems an appropriate place for people close to the end of their lives. The film falls a little flat as we wait for their father to die, but then the resolutions reached by the son and daughter at the end are brilliantly honest. A fable for modern times.

District B13

A brilliantly terrible French action film, much of District B13 is so poorly done that it races through atrocious and ends up amazing. The stunts are the highlight, many performed by parkour experts such as David Belle, one of the stars of the films and a co-founder of the art. Read more

‘Some people call me the space cowboy, some call me the gangster of love, some people call me Maurice, cause I speak with the pompetus of love’. The pompetus of love?! Really. I don’t know what the heck Steve Miller was on the day he wrote that, but I could sure do with some now. Read more

Given the amount of talent he has, it’s a mystery why German producer Pantha Du Prince not received more attention than he has. His minimal tech soundscapes are surprisingly melodic and moody, as reflected on his epic track, Asha, as good a starting point to the music of this German electro whiz as any.

There are few more joys an artist has in life than coming across great resources for inspiration. Lately I’ve been studying typography, the meaning of words, and then something as simple as trying to find all the ‘7 letter words’ I can so that it might fit into my latest musings. Read more
