FOR WEEKLY INSPIRATION Why
2 days in paris

Film / 2 Days in Paris

Films are popular primarily because they provide an escape from the drudgery and repetition of everyday life. The characters are then as unrealistic as most of the storylines — too well-dressed, attractive, insightful and witty to be real. With 2 Days in Paris, Marion (Julie Delphy) and Jack (Adam Goldberg) are petty, neurotic and jealous. They have stupid fights, awkward, unfulfilling sex, and are initially difficult to like because they are so visceral. Inappropriate parents, ex-boyfriends and a flirty sister provide further relationship gristle and quite quickly you find yourself caring about them for the same reason they were initially so repulsive — their authenticity. Bonus points for being set in Paris. French is such a delectable language that even a description of bowel movements or a bus timetable sounds musical. Delphy (also the writer and director) shows a talent for shot composition as major landmarks are ignored and instead we are shown the backstreets, markets, house parties and run-down apartments of Paris, all with an indisputable charm. The ending is then superb, reaching a level of insightfulness and feeling that is unfortunately only apparent in patches throughout the rest of the film. [watch the trailer for the movie]

District B13

A brilliantly terrible French action film, much of District B13 is so poorly done that it races through atrocious and ends up amazing. The stunts are the highlight, many performed by parkour experts such as David Belle, one of the stars of the films and a co-founder of the art. Read more

‘Some people call me the space cowboy, some call me the gangster of love, some people call me Maurice, cause I speak with the pompetus of love’. The pompetus of love?! Really. I don’t know what the heck Steve Miller was on the day he wrote that, but I could sure do with some now. Read more

Given the amount of talent he has, it’s a mystery why German producer Pantha Du Prince not received more attention than he has. His minimal tech soundscapes are surprisingly melodic and moody, as reflected on his epic track, Asha, as good a starting point to the music of this German electro whiz as any.
