FOR WEEKLY INSPIRATION Why

Video / Made of Japan

B-Reel is real smooth. And when I say real, I mean really. They created the latest ad for kicks brand Onitsuka Tiger. The campaign — Made of Japan — was launched in January 2007 with a giant shoe built out of Japanese collectibles. Then came the promo site. And now the campaign continues with this electric shoe inspired by Tokyo’s vibrant lights. Rather like L.A. Lights and a field of mushrooms.

Berlin’s Dense record store

One of the best record stores I have visited in recent times is the centrally located music store, Dense in Berlin. Their selection is impeccable, their staff are very friendly, and they know their music. I have visited many music stores around the world — including Ameoba in LA, Tower in Tokyo, Kims in New York, and the recently dissolved Smallfish in London — and I have to say Dense is definitely up there. Their electronic section is very well sourced, they have great vinyl and they don’t stock any commercial music. If you ever find yourself in Berlin, make sure you head to this store for music you’ve probably never heard of. [read also about Berlin’s Jewish Museum]

Bon Iver

When this scruffy fellow opens his gob, something high and mighty emanates. His music is great for long drives, in cold places and long nights in warm places. We speak of Bon Iver, who we interviewed recently. Read more

Barbara Proust

Barbra Proust is a German-born photographer exploring the idea of a photographic moment. Her ‘Exposures’ (bare with me) are multiple photographs of the same event or subject from different angles and various distances. She uses a radio-controlled release system to simultaneously trigger the camera shutters. It’s out with the single gaze and in with the multi-gaze, folks! [see also the photos of Mia McDonald]

Jan Von Holleben

Dadadadaaaaa! Kids are superheroes. Only in adulthood do we lose our charm and imagination. Jan Von Holleben’s latest photographic series Dreams of Flying distills the preciousness and freedom of a childhood many of us are lucky to have had. Van Holleben created various action scenes on the ground and shot them from above to achieve an interesting balance of reality and make believe. Read more

I’ve been waiting for a group like this. These New Puritans are balls in your face, 100 miles an hour, pure attack! A young British group that has most of the UK press in the palm of their skinny pale hands, they hint at a sonic mash of Bloc Party mixed with what White Rose Movement were supposed to be. What more could you want?

Listen to the These New Puritans track, Elvis.

The master of the minor key lament, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone is not quite as alone as he thinks he is. Or is he? Hmmm, that’s kinda deep. Anyway, we interviewed him recently. Read more

Many moons ago, when my hair was longer and my eyes were wider, I played guitar in a Sydney rock band. Over a period of several years, the four members in the group went from relative normality to the very personification of imagined rock glory. Read more

There are few more joys an artist has in life than coming across great resources for inspiration. Lately I’ve been studying typography, the meaning of words, and then something as simple as trying to find all the ‘7 letter words’ I can so that it might fit into my latest musings. Read more
