Lovestruck: Wrestling’s No. 1 Fan
Melbourne resident Sue Chuter is definitely wrestling’s number one fan. She’s obsessed with the local and international scene, even taking regular trips to America. In Lovestruck: Wrestling’s No. 1 Fan, director Megan Spencer does a wonderful job of telling Sue’s tragic personal story without passing judgement, making for uncomfortable but compelling viewing. Meeting Chuter’s friends, hearing about her short marriage and estranged daughter, what emerges is such a tragic character you don’t know whether to laugh or cry. There is something admirable about such blind devotion as well though, which also comes across. Chuter’s fanaticism involves her leaving messages for her favourite wrestlers which she knows will never be returned, and she lives in a home plastered with wrestler’s autographed pictures. Footage from Australia’s wrestling heyday at Festival Hall is also spliced throughout to add a welcome nostalgic feel. One part of Chuter’s life that was not examined to the detriment of the film was how she was able to afford all the travel. All together though, this film makes for uncomfortable but compelling viewing.

Melancholia is the follow up to the wonderfully confronting Antichrist. A delightful uncomfortable film, told from the point of view of a broken woman. Kevin’s just not right, and that’s obvious from the outset as mother Eva battles to bring him up in a world where the onus is put squarely back on the mother. The intensity is poured on throughout, as tragedy seems imminent. Read more

Disregard the buzz that surrounds those other cupcake shops in New York City. Cheeks Bakery in Williamsburg houses the best cupcakes that I’ve eaten. The clean and understated decor extends to the menu, where being fancy doesn’t rule on the cupcake shelves. Cheeks offers, simply, vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with either vanilla or chocolate cream. But if you do want more, Cheeks has that as well, a limited selection of pies and cakes.
