Melbourne-based documentary and music photographer Leah Robertson has an exhibition of her work running at Prahran’s MP Gallery until March 9th. We got the scoop on the inspirations behind her shots: What’s been the most memorable gig you’ve attended in recent times? ‘Sufjan, Arcade Fire, Bjork and Rufus have all just played consecutively in Melbourne. It’s been one hell of an incredible, horn-heavy experience. Sufjan and Rufus’ respective wings and stilettos were lovely. My favourite local bands, The Drones, My Disco, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, and Baseball, are always great live, always memorable’. Anyone you haven’t shot yet that you’d love to? ‘Bjork would be amazing, but it’d be difficult to live up to the talented slew of photographers who have shot her before me. I tried to steal some snaps of her from the crowd during her Big Day Out performance (no Melbourne side shows!), only to be rather firmly reprimanded by security. Threatened actually! I’d love to officially shoot Nick Cave. And Gareth Liddiard from The Drones. Despite religiously attending their shows, I’ve never felt able to sufficiently capture that ferocious stage presence’. Was it hard editing the images to run in the exhibition? ‘This is my first show, and I didn’t realise how heartbreaking it would be to have to cull shots! It was very difficult. What’s ended up in the show is pretty much what felt right. The images I was drawn to all have a similar emotive quality – audience members are all kind of dazed or engrossed, and the performers are intense. Actually, none of them are ‘performing’ as such – they’re all kind of in-between performing – gasping for breath, wiping away sweat … I think together the works convey a pretty cohesive atmosphere’.

I think I’ve tried about four times now to get a reservation at Melbourne’s Fifteen Restaurant whenever I find myself frequenting the glorious city, but today I finally got lucky. Two years after its debut on Jamie Oliver’s show, this restaurant is still living up to the hype. Essentially it offers Mediterranean cuisine, but the difference is that it’s actually authentic. The menu stretches further than your average spaghetti bolognaise, pizza or risotto, that’s for sure. I was left amazed by a baked baby ricotta, prosciutto and balsamic entrée; kipfler potato smothered in a mixed pesto; and a baked pear with orange and vanilla mascarpone for dessert. The waiter even gives you a choice as to what bread style you want to dip in some oil. Now, that’s what we call service.

I haven’t been this excited by a band in a long time. Florida’s Black Kids have crept under — and now over — the radar through a demo and some serious internet buzz from NME and Pitchfork. Not only are they ridiculously good, they’ve also offered their four-song demo — Wizard of Ahhh’s — for free on their MySpace page. Sweet.
Kristian Olson’s illustrations look like Magic Eye posters that have come to life as marauding, fractal-shooting creatures from Technicolor hell. Read more
Converse kicks off its hundredth anniversary with 1HUND(RED), a special artist series with proceeds going to the Global Fund. The project is a year-long release of shoes designed by notable artists, including Auckland-based illustrator, Dennis Juan Ma, whose shoe [above] is number twenty in the series.
The Nine Streets, or ‘De Negen Straatjes’, is so named for the nine small, cosy streets between Raadhuisstraat and Leidsestraat, just minutes from the heart of Amsterdam. Read more
How old must Kermit be now? Not to old to collaborate with skater-friendly retailer Supreme and photographer Terry Richardson. Kermit, who usually wears nothing, has been hooked up with some new threads to advertise the brand. It seems Kermit and Terry are the perfect work partners: they’ve even released a video clip documenting the shoot.
DJ Spooky — That Subliminal Kid — is just about the deepest crate digger around, trawling the barrels of long-lost record stores for choice vinyl to spin in his wickedly dubby sets. He gave us the inside word last week on his eight favourite songs right now via our sister website, My Secret Playlist. This is what he had to say about Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Panic in Babylon: ‘If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop. People are always looking to push the boundaries of street art, perhaps fed up with seeing the same (wild) style of graffiti over and over again. So, like Blu and Dan Witz, Julian Beever came into our lives like a breath of fresh air. His work is stunning, mind-boggling stuff: he manages to create a world ‘inside’ a pavement with his 3D pastel illustrations, tricking the eye into believing a dimension exists right below our very feet. I know that sounds simplistic, but honestly, have you noticed how rappers, certainly American rappers, have stopped narrating their lives and are purely focused on how great they are? Adult Hotel opens in Nanning, China
State-controlled news outlet Xinhua reports that a new ‘adult hotel‘ is opening in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Province in southern China. Apparently state censors think homosexuals and tattoo parlors sully their nation’s image, but not establishments aimed at facilitating heterosexual unions. The owner is apparently worried his business will be perceived as a brothel. Hmmm. In any case, the photos of a staff member demonstrating the, uh, equipment is caption-worthy for sure.
Kristin Baker’s paintings strike the eye like massive Hollywood blockbusters, but have the elegance of delicate watercolors. Read more
Freelance designer Alex Trochut uses typography, illustration and a solid idea to create works that communicate to each brief. He states that he doesn’t want to choose a particular style but instead enjoys ‘expressing himself and communicating though the needs of every project’. And his formula has worked: his clients include The Guardian G2, Nike Football, and my pencil-case favourite, Faber and Faber.
