Big Dreamers
Big Dreamers is a funny and intelligently constructed documentary that examines the efforts of a country town to stamp itself on Australia’s tourist map with a big gumboot, after falling sugar prices have decimated the local farming industry. Directed by Camille Hardman and written by John Fink, it’s obvious that a lot of time has been well spent putting this gripping story together. Accounts from the local identities, farmers, artists, rotary members and the resident UFO nut, as well as the main players, are combined effectively to form a coherent narrative. The scenery, farming images and weather are all used superbly to convey the country town feeling and the struggle to get the boot built. Segments which interview the guardians of other ‘big’ Australian eyesores provide some of the funniest moments. The film has successfully toured festivals around the world and it is disappointing it never received a commercial release. Films like ‘Kenny’ have proven there is an audience for this type of material.

I enjoyed last year’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but this is definitely better. It’s a spectacularly executed comedy farce, with the action constantly escalating along the way, adhering to the old comedy formula of putting the characters through hell for big laughs. Read more
Black Dynamite blaxploitation movie trailer
One very angry and unstoppable man wages war against drugs and malt liquor. A take-off of the old blaxploitation films, this is parody at its best, with many knowing nods to camera and hilarious moments involving clichés taken to their extremes. There’s the Asian kung-fu master, pimps and orphans hooked on heroin. It all begins with Black Dynamite being spurned on his quest for blood after his brother’s brutal murder, and then pushed further for the love of a good woman. There are hoes and guns, along with catchphrases and great one-liners. See it.

Music isn’t necessarily a serious venture. It’s almost funny when you find some you know will grate to dust the stiff upper lipped critics of the world. Every now and then I like the type of sound that hops around the edge of your ears without working its way into your brain and messing up the seratonin levels. And Californian 16-piece tropical-ska-pop group, Still Flyin’, do just that for me. It’s a good laugh, quite catchy, and an awesome live experience so I’m told: especially with the sun out, a can of cider in your hand and a bunch of grinning faces skanking around you.

Whilst I was made aware (through the film), of the financial plight of the town called Tully, it came as a relief that the ‘main player’ and ‘could be saviour’ came in the shape of a bloody big golden gumboot. Through the process of erection there is much griping and sniping (which is funny), but at the end, good will for the new tourist attraction (which could be the answer and bring the moola), happily dominates. Beautifully filmed lovely story with wonderful characters.
