Only a band from Akron, Ohio could come up with the whole de-evolution theory. Apparently Devo had business cards that read ‘Chinese computer rock ‘n’ roll, scientific music + vis. arts for beautiful mutants’. This track, Jocko Homo, is one of my favorites of theirs.

Byrne and Eno collaborate. Again!
Brian Eno and David Byrne recently finished their first collaboration in about 30 years. For the most part, Eno did the music and Byrne wrote some tunes, words and sang. It’s familiar, but completely new as well. The new record is called Everything that Happens will Happen Today and it will be available on August 18th. In September, Byrne will begin a tour on which he will be playing music from the new album as well as music from their previous collaborations - three Talking Heads albums and Bush of Ghosts, amongst them.

Caught The Dust Dive the other night at Glasslands. They’re a bunch of hippies, but even I have to admit, they’re atmospheric live show – consisting of violin, gently strummed guitar, a few piano and sampler twinkles here and there, and sound samples from the found footage projected behind the band – is really powerful, like the warm rush of fond memories that hits you an instant before the mushroom cloud annihilates everything. Frontman Bryan Zimmerman even plays the musical saw, and you really can’t argue with that.

The glut of pretentious art rock bands in New York has been getting me down and making me hate going to shows. That is, until I got to catch Extra Life a couple weeks ago. These guys obviously listen to everything Tzadik puts out, but as challenging and off-kilter as their angular squall can get, they’re not averse to, you know, making music. Their intricately-composed songs are almost operatic in their structure, and feature hints of everything from Arther Russell to Meshuggah. They even break into some pleasant and jaunty folk moments. Plus, they have a violinist, and violins in rock music is rad.

Shortstack are a Washington DC band that not many people know about outside of the the city. They recently released an EP of covers with some sweet choices on there — The Kinks, Captain Beefheart, and The Pupils, among others. Once again a band takes different styles, sounds, and time periods, and owns it like an extra finger.

Aurel Schmidt’s intricate drawings make me want to start a band just so I can use it as album art. The DIY-outsider tack many artists have taken of late has produced some art that makes you think ‘I could do that’, but Schmidt’s work is inimitable — her rendering of hair must make other artists furious with envy. Despite their over-the-top rockisms (ridiculously monstrous rigs, smoke machines, and high-wattage light show), Jucifer backs the bombast up with some colon-bursting heaviness. The duo from Athens, Gergia, take 90s-era grrl rawk and combines it with slow, plodding, sludge metal like High on Fire on Vicodin.
Michael Wolf, a German born American photographer, has lived in Hong Kong since 1995. His work explores the ways city-dwellers in China and Hong Kong shape their surroundings in an ‘organic metropolis’. His series — Architecture of Density — has some breathtaking images of Hong Kong’s apartment buildings.
In Japan, when one makes squeezing gestures with both hands at chest level, one is gesturing that one wants candy — soft, round, bouncy candy. At least, that’s what this commercial would have us believe.
Anytime you find Houndstooth and Hoody in the same sentence you know it will be a good day. Well, today has been a great day and New Dandyism, the lovechild of a conglomate of lusty designers — Sons by Obedient Sons, wood wood and Call of the Wild — is the reason. Ok, so I’m speaking from first-hand perspective here because as I type on this warm morning, with the faintest slither of sun creeping its way through the privacy blinds in my living room, I’m wearing the very same shirt that the dude in this photo is wearing. Yup, the same damn one. Perhaps I’m not looking quite as groomed as he is, but hey, it’s a start. Australian fashion label Das Monk is my new favourite t-shirt label and this shirt is more comfortable to wear that a thousand pairs of Ozone socks. Das Monk? Yes it is.
Sara Macel’s Nighttime series shot around Brooklyn, New York, reminds me of the movie, 200 Cigarettes. Much like the movie, her photos have an energy of anticipation - like showing up two hours before the party gets going and then walking home at 5am before the sunrise. Read more

I was just recently introduced to the work of artist Misaki Kawai. I must say that my interest in her work has since become something of a creative obsession. Her trippy, child-like figures and animals, painted in the most expressive, perfectly satisfying candy colored hues, are more than enough to send me running for the bag of jelly beans and jolly ranchers hidden in my cupboard.
