Ignacio Torres is a photographer I met in my hometown of Denton, Texas. It wasn’t until he moved to New York City, though, that we became friends. I had the honor of working a bit with him this past summer in New York, and through this realized just how unique and phenomenal he really is. Cynthia von Buhler’s Speakeasy Dollhouse is a biographical tale of murder, mafia, and intrigue in New York City told with handmade dolls and sets, in conjunction with an immersive play. It was initially set for a two-night run, limited only to it’s Kickstarter supporters. However, due to overwhelming interest, von Buhler added a Halloween show, and plans to add more dates and locations in the new year.
Style Wars: The Rise of Hip Hop and Graffiti Art in the 80s
New York City in the early 1980s saw the break out of hip hop and a whole new style of expression for urban youths. A big part of that was the rise of graffiti, where ‘bombing’ became its own art form. The documentary Style Wars takes a fascinating up close look at the players of the day, what they were up against, and how hip hop culture changed the face of the city.

Beautiful appropriation or ugly sacrilege?

Last weekend I went to the Golden West in Baltimore to check out the What Cheer? Brigade, a marching band from Providence. I wasn’t expecting much, but when they opened with a cover of Slayer’s Raining Blood, my knees buckled. I think I could hear a musak version of that riff, and I’d still bang my head. The rest of the band’s set was just as riotous, with people dancing so hard, you’d think we were at Mardi Gras. I haven’t had that much fun at a show in ages.

These rings are handmade in Italy by Ashanti Raffaele Cinzio and come in a set of three, shaped flat and polished in a brushed finish. One sterling silver, one yellow bronze and one rose bronze. The rings individually measure 2mm height on the thin side and raise gradually around the ring to a height of 50mm to the feature side. As a set, the total band width consistently measures 7mm.
