Dave Gorman — America Unchained

Likely lad Dave Gorman is never short of a wacky idea. From seeking out 54 other namesakes to traipsing around the globe guided by a unique internet search, Gorman gives a good anecdote. His latest project — America Unchained — is no less peculiar. But this time he may have hit the sweet spot. His attempt to go coast to coast in the U.S. without giving money to the Man has been captured on film and has already won the audience award for best Documentary at the Austin Film Festival. The DVD is out in the UK, with the book to follow internationally in April. [watch also the Construction of the American Dream]

Tyson, hard-hitting documentary by James Toback

If you haven’t already seen Tyson, James Toback’s documentary of Iron Mike, do so immediately. Toback’s lack of editorial lets one of the most fascinating athletes ever speak in his own surprisingly introspective and articulate words. Toback heightens the manic contradictions in Kid Dynamite’s personality with schizophrenic, split-screen editing, creating a film that has a profound impact both emotionally and aesthetically.

Waltz with Bashir

The international release of this film on December 25th 2008 couldn’t really have been more timely, given what unfolded in Gaza as the year drew to a close. At the centre of this docu-animation is a former Israeli soldier who served at the time of the Sabra and Shatila massacre in the 1982 Lebanon War, and the film traces him as he is forced to relive the memory of the massacre and Israel’s complicity in it. The style of animation, some almost photo-real, adds to the horror of the film’s subject.

Pangea Day

Documentarian Jehane Noujaim and TED have teamed up for a rather ambitious film and media event called Pangea Day on May 10th. The conference-film festival invites both amateur and professional filmmakers to submit short films. Read more

I Was Told There’d Be Cake

Full-time writer, part-time maker of dioramas, New Yorker Sloane Crosley has released a collection of her witty essays entitled I Was Told There’d Be Cake. Recounting tales of plastic pony collections, wanting to raise her unborn kids in Belgium, and locking herself out of her apartment twice in one day, Crosley’s stories will make you think of Larry David if he was a cute thirty year-old woman. No wonder HBO snapped up the rights to the book.

Teddy Thompson’s In My Arms

Teddy Thompson’s fourth album is the reason why I have been ignoring this year’s other new releases. A Piece Of What You Need is teeming with sophisticated pop tunes, such as the first single In My Arms, a song that’s so memorable I may need to go into therapy if it isn’t out of my head by year’s end.

For an industry that spends so much time fratenising with musicians, few designers ever admit to being primarily influenced by the music industry itself. Electronic Poet are an exception. Read more

The demise of our beloved print medium is a harsh reality that a lot of independent magazines have been dealing with for the past five years at least. So we all frequent a ton of different sites that we like and one in particular that’s really given itself a pick-me-up online, for the better good of longevity and legacy, is Planet magazine. With its long history in poster design and with a younger generation of artists who grew up with both Eastern and Western European influences, the ‘new Poland’ is booming. I had a blast when I visited Warsaw about a year ago and met all the movers and shakers in design. My friend just sent me a link to Tymek Jezierski’s amazing comic works. They’re so fresh! The only problem I have with them is that I don’t read Polish.

Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion. Contrary to the council’s intentions, black metal is as popular as ever in Malaysia, and is a recognizable cultural touchstone there, as indicated by the above clip from the 2005 film Filem Rock.

These twin sixty-story towers to be built in Malaysia feature a combination of ‘continuous, flowing, double-curved perforated surface with a flickering, crystalline, transparent single-curved surface that is triangulated on an enormous scale’. The design by New York-based architectural firm, Asymptote, includes a 400,000 square foot retail section and the Penang Performing Arts centre.

Scanners’ new single Salvation

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
