Emma Crisp’s Trigger Finger
If you’re in Melbourne over the next few weeks, pop down to the pigmentGALLERY to see new works by UK artist, Emma Crisp. Called Trigger Finger, the exhibition ‘is an exploration of gun and weapon themes in contemporary life’. ‘A popular motif in streetwear for years, the trend has been absorbed by high-end fashion, jewellery and even homewares. Crisp’s work explores the glamorisation and recent surge of popularity of gun culture, searching for the fine line where the image of a weapon shifts from contemporary design element to a representation of violence and war. Making frequent use of the image of the hand to portray a simple but striking connection to human nature, the exhibition presents several groups of work: large scale drawings of hands encasing bright camo print weapons; portraits of guerilla soldiers wearing designer fashion; sculptures of gang-signs paraded as wall decor’. The show opens on Wednesday Feb 13th and runs until Feb 23th.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! The philosophy of a beginning is to me, a wonderful concept. I really enjoy flicking through the back catalogues of a musician and discovering their origin, then tracing their musical journey to the present. So for American-born, Paris-based sister duo CocoRosie, who released their third album The Adventure of Ghosthouse and Stillborn to much acclaim, making the trip to their beginnings is more than worth the journey: their debut album, Le Maison de Mon Reve (released back in 2004) was a gentle stroll through their pop and classical influences, which melt together seamlessly into a backdrop for their unique and enchanting voices.
Already with a Spectrum show under their belt, The Archerbolds are an up and coming Australian band well worth checking out. I saw the Sydney-based lads play recently at the Mars Hill Café and it was evident that they should be permanently rocking out on a real stage; not in front of coffee sippers. Their floating lyrics, smart guitar riffs and meaty bass lines are infused by The Strokes, Mars Volta, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin — ultimately producing a freshly spun modern-vintage sound. Lead vocalist and guitarist Geoffrey ‘Gep’ Rectin says The Archerbolds plan to create a solid sound for next year: ‘Over summer, we’re recording an EP and working on a set sound, defining more of an image’. If their track, Rest Your Soul, is anything to go by, then it should be pretty dandy.
